Col John Theodore Muir dies after a long life marked by leadership and philanthropy. He was a Mason and former Territorial Militia member, honored by Gov. Dempsey and buried in El Paso after a service at a local Methodist church.
J A Gary died at 1 30 a m Sunday at his home west of Lordsburg after a period of illness. Born in Winona Mississippi he lived in Fort Worth Texas where he was a merchant. He married Matie Austin in Cabot Arkansas. They moved to Lordsburg sixteen years ago and later to Lordsburg last November. Survived by wife Matie Geary sister Judith Williams of Likely California and cousin Mrs J A Tripp of New York City. Funeral Monday at Baptist Church with Rev Tate and Rev Poage officiating. Music by local quartet and Mrs Thelman Ross and Mrs H E Seofield. Pallbearers listed. Interment Mountainview Cemetery.
Col John L Lee assumed command of the Prisoner of War Camp at Lordsburg replacing Lt Col Rainbelt who moves to Hearne Texas He hails from Virginia and comes from the Headquarters Eighth Service Command where he led Military Training for two years Previously he was Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Houston High School The new commander hosted a luncheon with Lordsburg civic leaders at the Officers Club to discuss camp and community matters

Hidalgo and Grant counties praise the election of H Vearle Payne as Speaker of the State Legislature. Payne is described as an able lawyer and popular representative, a position viewed as second in importance to the Governor.
State College hosts two state conferences that set 1945 production goals for New Mexico farmers. About 125 county committeemen and agents spread to county offices to promote goals while 53 agents study major agricultural issues before heading out tomorrow. Extension Director A B Fite says the aim is to ease the tough job and support continued record food and fiber production despite labor and equipment shortages.
Soil Conservation Service officials study conservation plans for the 127000 acre Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron Oklahoma. Gift to Boy Scouts from Waite Phillips Tulea oil man. Phillips stocked the ranch with sheep deer antelope bears buffaloes elk and other animals. Scouts continue his plan to protect game and birds.
Lt Col Dwight L Hood deputy state director of Selective Service says the new draft order will not make a great deal of difference for New Mexico farm era aged 18 to 25. He cannot estimate exact numbers affected but Downplays sizable effect.
Early estimates from the Western Farmers Association indicate calf slaughter in 1944 is roughly 50 percent higher than in 1943. The forecast suggests continued strong demand and potential impacts on milk supply and meat prices.

The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Womans Club last Wednesday evening with eleven members present including Juniors. Grace Wright presided in place of the absent president as secretary reported sending 20 membership cards. fund projects included paper drives and a birthday box fundraiser. hospital aid and Comforts for veterans were described, along with a $11,900 in sales and a national appreciation certificate.
General Chairman Eugene Monague announces two big dances on January 30 to raise funds. One event will be at the La Fiesta with Creighton Bowman as floor manager, the other at the Palador under Ralph P. Smith. Both are supervised by Leo Cohen and the public is urged to mark January 20, the President’s birthday, as a must date.
A dance will be held at 8 p.m. Friday January 12 in the Lordsburg Camp Recreation Hall. Special invitation is extended to the ladies of Lordsburg and Silver City. Miss Bess Johnston has resumed duties at Central School after returning from Snyder Texas last Saturday.
A letter dated October 1, 1944 from Alfredo Guzman to Mrs. Guadalupe N. Guzman in Lordsburg New Mexico notes his welfare and asks no letters until he reaches his permanent camp. It recalls Pvt Alfredo N Guzman ASN 48214896 missing after action with his regiment in Holland and praises his heroism and the regiment’s Normandy citation.
Second lieutenant Fredrick W. Jones son of Mrs Elnora P. Jones Virden Illinois has earned the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flight. The 21 year old pilot serves with a Italy based 16th AAF B 17 Flying Fortress and has completed six combat missions over Europe. Jones is a 1939 Virden High School graduate who played basketball and softball. He joined the AAF February 18 1943 in Salt Lake City and earned his wings March 12 1944 at Pecos Army Air Field Texas after working previously for E J Bartells Construction Company in Portland Oregon.
Edwin and Mrs DeMoss visited Edwin's parents last week arriving January 1 and leaving January 7 for New York. Edwin will attend a refresher course at Colgate University and then a Midshipman's before being assigned to duty.
Mrs. Ewald Kipp of Warren Arizona attended the funeral of John T Mutfr in a community service. The brief ceremony honored the deceased with local residents and family members in attendance.
New Mexico price and rationing board members and volunteers were lauded by Price Administrator Cheater Bowles for their work toward victory in World War II. The state lists 467 price panel assistants and 555 board panel members along with thousands of educational and clerical volunteers. Eleanor Wald recruits more volunteers as the third anniversary of the board organization arrives. Messages of praise were sent by John D. Bingaman and John E. Campbell, who also spoke on radio about the boards’ efforts.
A wartime rationing notice warns that Red Stamps Q6 to Xb Book Four for meats are valid while Blue Stamps X6 to G2 for processed foods exist. Sugar Stamps No 34 Book 4 are invalid for five pounds, with a new Sugar Stamp to be issued February 1. Shoe Stamps Airplane Stamps 1 2 and 3 Book Three allow one pair per stamp. the next shoe stamp will not be valid until late summer.
U S Army Camp in Lordsburg hosted a noon gathering with civic leaders and Army officers to foster friendly relations. Col Lee led the event praising Lordsburg climate and calling for a moral awakening. attendees included Lt Col 2 Commander Col Vincent D Phillips and local officials.

District OPA official met restaurant proprietors hotel managers and other institutional buyers this week to explain rationing regulations. He visited Las Veras Raton Clayton Tucumcari and Santa Rosa with R W Harper William H Black Fredrick Hooper and Clyde Linthicum planning southern state visits next week.
In reply to questions on canceling shoe stamps the Price Administrator Bowles said not a chance in a million. A rationing official urged conserving stamps for next spring and summer.

Mrs. Dorothy Gale learns from the War Department that her husband Pyt Lester Gale was wounded in action in Germany on December 18. The injury is in the arm and he is hospitalized in France for treatment and recovery.
