Three Lordsburg Mavericks Named to Mythical District Team

In 1946 Lordsburg High School football earned three players on the district all star list. Ralph Craig Clemente Bassa and Jesus Estrada were named Mavericks on the all district team compiled by Las Cruces Sun News sports staff. Honorable mentions include Harold Taylor Inez Gutierrez Raymond Pennington and Bill Oliver.

New Birth Records Set in State

The State Department of Public Health reports a record month for births in November 1946 with 2,000 birth certificates issued. Of these 1,182 births occurred in November 1946 and 729 in earlier months of 1946.

Funeral Services Held for Mark A. Hill Rancher and Lordsburg Pioneer

Funeral services were conducted at Heather Chapel for Mark A. Hill 80 a retired rancher and Lordsburg pioneer who died the day after his eightieth birthday He was born December 25 1866 in Alabama and moved here about 60 years ago He is survived by two sons Mark A Hill Jr daughter Maye Kerr Daisy Colson Ola Vanzandt one brother W P Hill and 18 grandchildren 13 great grandchildren The Rev F R Poage officiated burial followed in Shakespeare Cemetery with Heather Mortuary in charge of arrangements

Christmas Party Hosted by Legion Auxiliary Juniors

The American Auxiliary Juniors hosted a Christmas party for their auxiliary mothers on December 23 at Mrs. E. D. Wright’s home. Gifts were exchanged and carols sung, with Mrs. Charles Williams reading “The Night Before Christmas.” Refreshments were served to a group including Mrs. William Beach and Miss Deanna Hill.

1947 Vehicle Plates On Sale At County Treasurer

The 1947 passenger and truck plates are on sale at the County Treasurer's Office. World War II veterans have no exemption. World War I veterans may qualify for an exemption with proof of service and NM residency before 1934. New plates must be affixed by March 1.

County officers installed for Hidalgo two-year term

County officers for the new two-year term were installed Thursday. The slate includes R. R. Gale probate judge, Mrs. Rachel Atkinson county clerk, Oscar Allen sheriff, Mrs. Percy Brown tax assessor, Mrs. Mertice Brooks treasurer, Miss Katherine Richards county school superintendent, Hiram Pace first district commissioner, Lee P. Smith second district commissioner, and W. H. Curley Walters third district commissioner. Mr. Allen begins his seventh term as Hidalgo sheriff, succeeding Roy Kerr who did not seek re election.

Community Xmas Tree Party Draws Hundreds in Lordsburg

Hundreds of residents attended the Christmas tree event north of Lordsburg City Hall sponsored by the Fire Department with help from local merchants and citizens. Donations totaling 309.65 included 257.11 from personal gifts and a 52.54 basketball fund. names and contributors span L. E. Gay to Ritter Lumber Co. and many downtown businesses aiding in wiring and stocking drives.

New Ulmoris townsite planned east of Lordsburg New Mexico

Mrs. Merle Horzmann of Lordsburg announces Ulmoris N M a new townsite five miles east on the Southern Pacific siding. Lots 50 by 150 feet start at a minimum price. The plan includes a parkway a church school and hotel facilities for tourists with an underground stream and a water system planned.

Turnips Grow Big in Hidalgo County

Isaac Van Meter displays a crop of turnips grown on his ranch in Hidalgo County. The turnips averaged 3.12 pounds each with one specimen weighing 5 pounds, highlighting unusually large produce for the area.

Cold snap brings snow to Lordsburg area this week

The Lordsburg region faced its coldest weather of the season with temperatures near 20 degrees, rising to about 30 by Thursday morning. Snow started Wednesday afternoon and continued Thursday with about two inches by Thursday afternoon. Roads from the Continental Divide to El Paso were reported dangerous. nearby Deming and Las Cruces felt a strong sandstorm. Rain fell Friday night and temperatures fluctuated from below freezing to the low 40s.

New Mexico Sheriff Association to push merit system act

The New Mexico Sheriff and Police Association plans to ask the 1947 state legislature for a merit system covering all law enforcement officers. The group also seeks higher prisoner feeding fees, higher deputy salaries, and credits Gov. Dempsey and others for recent license plate and radio improvements.

Golf Course For City Is Planned

Plans to develop a nine hole golf course with a clubhouse at Lordsburg Airport were announced by Alan A. Koff who has a ten year lease from the City Council. A golf pro from a nearby city is to assist in planning and layout. A hobby shop for children is also planned and community support for the airport project is urged.

Improvement Program Scheduled for Lordsburg Airport

The City Council approved a ten year lease of the municipal airport to Alan A. Korf of Lordsburg. Plans include air hangar painting, marking, new wings, CAA training, modern facilities, a public lounge, classrooms, a parking area, and flight training for veterans and others. Additional housing for airport personnel and a 800 acre airport area tied to city recreation, including playgrounds and swimming facilities, are planned with Harold J. Rolfe leading recreation and airport committees.

Lordsburg group usher New Year with progressive supper

Lordsburg residents welcomed the new year with a progressive supper. The salad course started at Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lunt. Enchiladas and tacos followed at Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Romney’s home, with jello and whipped cream at Mrs. Harwood’s. Oldest Bible Found in Cairo Bookshop

A Bible dating to the second century was found in a Cairo bookshop. It is the oldest extant copy and contains the Gospel of Matthew, Paul's letters, and some Old Testament fragments.
