Lordsburg Liberal staff conduct on the street interviews about the new year births. Local residents express immediate hopeful resolutions and predictions for the future creating a positive feeling.
Jim Wells at Buena Vista Ranch measured 25.94 inches of precipitation for 1983, slightly below normal. A flood‑like period late Septem ber into early October produced 5.95 inches, contributing to 10.57 inches for October and November. The season totaled 25.94 inches, 43.1 percent of the Lordsburg atmospheric condensation for 1983.
Hidalgo Sheriff Billy Darnell said the department and State Police faced a heavy workload during the past holding season. Antonio Gomez, an illegal alien, was arrested for burglary and criminal damage to property four hours after the Red Hat Cafe break in on December 21, 1983. Daniel Palumbo and three juveniles were nabbed for larceny and burglary tied to H A Saucedo residence break in at 324 Railroad Blvd. Most stolen property was recovered. Alonzo Cuevas was arrested for marijuana possession on December 28. Cecil Greene’s name appears with a partial address listed.
The City Corner reports a grant covering 80 percent of a fifteen passenger van with air conditioning and a wheelchair ramp for the Senior Citizens Program, with 20 percent share about 3000 dollars. City Engineer David Chavez will attend a Santa Fe workshop on CDEG funds. A separate crime roundup lists multiple December 28 to January 3 arrests in Lordsburg and nearby, including charges for possession of controlled substances and burglary.
Hidalgo Medical Service schedules a noon luncheon on January 13 at Rico's Restaurant inviting the public to meet Dr. Maynard. He will serve Hidalgo County and begin practicing medicine in early fall 1984 during his community visit.
The Lordsburg Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday January 10 1984 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room at Lordsburg Municipal Schools located at 501 West Fourth Street Lordsburg New Mexico.
New Mexicans filing new unemployment claims on or after January 3 1984 may receive a new maximum weekly payment of 145 dollars. Dr Daniel Lopez cabinet secretary for the Employment Security Department said the rise is based on an average weekly wage of 289 97 for the year ending June 30 1983. The increase from 142 to 145 is the smallest in recent years and reflects slower wage inflation, while the minimum remains 29 dollars.
Pharmacist Chris Sanders will be out of town on Monday January 9. The drug store will stay open but pharmacy services will be curtailed and limited to essential duties.
Gene Moore, former Hidalgo County sheriff and ex Lordsburg police chief, announces a 1984 bid for Hidalgo County sheriff. He has prior sheriff terms in 1973 75 79 and 81 and served as chief deputy 77 78 under Rudy Lara. Other announced races include Ramona Baisa for treasurer and Bob Kerr for assessor. primary set for June 5 and Lordsburg city council seats election on March 6.
