Hidalgo County's first winery under construction at Pyramid Farm

San Andres Corporation is building Hidalgo County's first winery at Pyramid Farm southeast of Lordsburg. The 15,000 square foot prefabricated concrete facility, designed by Harris and Accos of Las Cruces, will open for the next harvest in August and expansion is planned for 1986. The firm aims to produce up to 50,000 gallons next year using Pinot Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, French Colombard, Riesling and Zinfandel, with 210 acres planted last year and 300 more planned. The project is financed wholly by San Andres, which began in New Mexico 3.5 years ago after scouting wine opportunities abroad.
