The Southern Pacific unveils the 4-8-2 Mountain type passenger locomotives designed for heavier trains and smoother starts. With 67 510 pounds of traction and 8 260 horsepower, they serve the Los Angeles to El Paso route and support a larger fleet of 118 new engines planned for 1924 to improve comfort and economy.

Dance Held For Everett Sisters At Animas Schoolhouse

For the first time in years the Everett sisters gathered at the Everett home on December 29. A dance was held in their honor at the Animas school house with five cars of young people from Lordsburg attending. The attendees included Mrs. Fred H Arnold of Tucson and Mrs. Elton Barksdale of Bisbee, along with Bessie and Margaret Everett of Lordsburg.

Mr and Mrs Guy Moore of Detroit are visiting the Briel home. The Moores were married in Lordsburg years ago and have many friends here. They plan to go to California in a few days.

Board of Inquiry Confirms Conductor Fault in Gage Collision

On December 30 an assistant general manager convened a second board of inquiry into the December 17 accident at Gage New Mexico. The panel found Conductor C C Bryant liable for the crash by attempting to move 11 cars from Quincy to Gage without air cut in while a bad order car remained on the train.

Night watchman is right on the job

About five o clock on New Years morning the night watchman spotted a colored burglar in the Liberty Store. The thief planned to steal enough clothing and blankets to last years, but the gun jammed and he fled, leaving the loot behind with only a broken window as damage. The piece praises the value of a night watchman.

Anita Mining Co Not to Blame Says Jury

The Nellie Bly mine disaster near Lordsburg New Mexico on December 23 1923 killed miners Ynez Esparza and Pedro Luna. A coroner s jury found the deaths were caused by an unpreventable platform fall 210 feet below the shaft collar with no blame attached to Anita Copper Co and noted expert miners survived. Grace of Giving Sermon Opens Church Year

The Church of Christ schedules Bible School at 10 am led by J M Dorrance, morning sermon at 11 on The Grace of Giving, followed by the first quarterly business meeting of the year. First National Bank of Deming Shuts Doors

The First National Bank in Deming New Mexico failed to reopen on Monday as a voluntary suspension followed an inability to pay a 90000 dollar check drawn by William J Berry Luna County treasurer. Bonding issues and rising loan losses contributed to the closure though managers received local sympathy. A receiver was expected to be appointed soon with depositors awaiting possible recovery. The bank, organized in 1905, had 30 stockholders capable of doubling their stake if needed.

Smart Banker Returns State Deposit in Lordsburg

A Lordsburg bank returned a $14,000 state deposit to the New Mexico state treasurer with thanks, stating the state deposits are too much bother for it to desire. The note appears in the New Mexico State Tribune.

Barling Bomber Visited Town to Gauge Air Route Site

Walter H Barling designer of the Barling bomber along with Don Smith and T D Bowhan visited Lordsburg to discuss a landing field for a proposed airway from court to comet. The 43000 pound aircraft with 120 ft wingspan and 70 ft length impressed local officials who pledged rapid field arrangements.

Christian Endeavor Watch Party at New Year’s Eve Church

A Cheiatian Endeavorers group held a watch party at the church on New Year’s Eve. Between 60 and 78 attendees played games and enjoyed snacks before an 11 00 prayer and song service. The group ended the old year with hymns and welcomed the new year in praise and renewed commitment.
