In the Animas School District two candidates filed for the vacant No. 3 board member seat and four filed for additional positions, as February elections approach.
An EMT course starts January 5 and ends February 27 in Lordsburg with classes three nights weekly and some Saturdays. Instructor W L Sanders states UNM certified, $38 fee per student, applications at County Court House or Ambulance Building or by phone. Course aims to recruit Hidalgo County Ambulance Service workers.
A report by the New Mexico Transportation and Health and Environment departments, published in Pediatrics, analyzes 1981–1984 data on the state child restraint law. The study notes a 33 percent drop in fatalities for children five and under, a 13 percent reduction in nonfatal injuries, and restraint usage rising from 10 percent to over 40 percent. Children not restrained were five times likelier to be killed and twice as likely to be injured. Copies available through HED Epidemiology, Santa Fe.
Animas and Lordsburg dominate the Class AA All-State selections by the Associated Press. Rueben Nieblas of Animas tops the list, with eight picks, while Lordsburg’s Lonnie Allen, Mark Williams, and Oscar Alba earn first team honors. Animas also places Brent Bagwell, Joe George, and Richard Miller on offense, with Beltram, Croom, Miller, and George on defense.
Lee Wesley a Silver City attorney for 21 years was named by Governor Toney Anaya as Division 1 Judge in the Sixth Judicial District to serve until 1988. He replaces Judge Norman Hodges who retires December 30. The district covers Grant Hidalgo and Luna Counties.
Mrs. Rosalie Hidlgo Cortez of Lordsburg New Mexico died December 18 1986. She leaves husband Heliodoro Cortez and children Frank Hidalgo Manuel Cortez Elizabeth Jennie Bella Sylvia Rosemary and others. Funeral services were held December 22 at St Josephs Catholic Church with burial at Shakespeare Cemetery in Lordsburg.
Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department reports a successful food drive supplying 13 families with Christmas baskets and distributing 100 toys to area children. Jose Luis Contreras aged 77 died at his home in Lordsburg on December 20. Born in San Simon, Ariz, he served in World War II and worked for Southern Pacific Railroad before retiring. Survived by son David, daughter Corina, brothers Manuel Luis Crispin Tito, and sisters Josefina Luisa Bessie, funeral at Shakespeare Cemetery with Heather Funeral Home.
The City Corner reports January council will consider amending the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance. Commercial zones will split into four sections with varied uses from more restrictive to broader, adding dwellings and mobile homes to C-1 and trimming in C-3.
