Government Clamps Down On Rubber Use As Supplies Tighten

The government explains that 56 percent of rubber comes from areas already under Japanese control or invasion, with 43 percent from Sumatra Java and Borneo, leaving scarce Far East supply. Civilian consumption must drop from 47,000 to about 16,000 tons monthly, an 80 percent cut, while essential manufacturing and military needs rise. Reclaimed and synthetic rubbers will fill gaps as stockpiles of tires remain large but only two months of normal demand could be covered.
