Gold Pour Marks Westar Lordsburg Ore Project Start

Westar mine manager Bob Lowery poured gold and silver December 23 after over a year and more than two million dollars spent on the Lordsburg project. The initial 50 ounce pour is 0 to 50 percent gold, with refining planned at Lordsburg and stockpiled ore to drive a 25 to 30 person operation over years. Water is pumped from the Bonney shaft and cyanide leaching is used to extract metals.

City Election Filing Date January Fifth

City Clerk Sherri Arredondo states filing for the March 1 1988 municipal election must meet strict state rules. Filing day is January 5 1988 from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Municipal Clerk’s office with required documents including a declaration of candidacy and a certified voter registration affidavit showing a street address.

Telephone Breakdown Hits Lordsburg Area

Russell Roberts of Western New Mexico Telephone Company reports that on Monday at 3:45 p.m. a road side crew cut a main transmission cable between Lordsburg and Deming one mile east of Muir exit, isolating Lordsburg Roadforks and nearby areas for about four hours until service restoration at 7:45 p.m. Seventy two long distance circuits and twenty four special service circuits were affected. The company apologizes for the inconvenience.

EMT Course To Be Offered By Local Instructors

An EMT basic course will be offered starting in January conducted by W L Sanders and Mike Coogan. The program aims to train participants in essential emergency medical techniques and patient care under certified supervision.

Lordsburg Board Sets Regular Meeting Schedule

The Lordsburg Board of Education will meet Tuesday January 5 at 7 00 p m in the Board Room Lordsburg Municipal Schools The ambulance course runs seven weeks Saturdays and four weeknights at the Ambulance Station Applications available at the Ambulance Building or by calling 542 8272 for details.

Five Hundred Housed At Lordsburg National Guard Armory

A winter storm closed I 10 near Lordsburg forcing travellers to shelter at the National Guard Armory. SP4 Phillip Hickson opened the facility at midnight December 25, bringing in five hundred people through December 26 as Mayor Smith and local groups aided with food and funds including a $300 Red Cross grant. Local agencies and businesses aided shelter operations and provisions.

The El Paso Times Christmas weekend highlights Lordsburg residents helping hundreds of holiday travelers stranded by road conditions. Volunteers worked through Christmas night and into the next day to assist families, embodying Christmas spirit and community benevolence.
