Commissioners Seek Input On Roads

A special County Commissioner's meeting at the courthouse discussed accepting or abandoning roads. Three neutral viewers will inspect the roads and report to the commission, followed by a public hearing. They aim to announce the three viewers by March 3, then hearings over roughly 60 days. Five roads were offered for abandonment and four for acceptance, with public notices to follow.

Phelps Dodge to restart New Cornelia Mine at Ajo Arizona

The company announced that operations will resume at the New Cornelia Branch mine and concentrator in Ajo Arizona on February 28 with about 600 workers being recalled. The Ajo smelter stays closed and concentrates will be rail transported to Hidalgo smelter in New Mexico for processing.

January 1983 traffic fatalities report by bureau chief

The State Transportation Department Traffic Safety Bureau released January fatality statistics. John Fenner reported 25 fatal accidents causing 25 deaths, down from 33 incidents and 36 deaths in January 1982. Eighteen deaths involved motor vehicles and seven were pedestrians.

Thousands Stop At Lordsburg Port Of Entry

John Adams of the State Tourism and Travel Division said the Lordsburg Welcome Wagon at the Port of Entry on I 10 guided 18 614 visitors to New Mexico in 1982, up 15 percent from 1981. Overall, the division greeted nearly a half million people across five full time and six summer centers, an eight percent rise from 416 7989 in 1981, in a year Adams called impressive despite recession.
