Mrs Basil Giles and Mrs Edith Wilson entertained Loidsburg Business and Professions Women at an evening of readings on February 10. Guests included Mrs Conder Mrs Scofield Gladys Sapp and others with sherbet tea and coffee served. A brief business meeting followed and plans for the March meeting were discussed in a note on the club’s anniversary and leadership.

Beloved Pioneer Goes to His Eternal Reward

Beloved pioneer Brand Bramble Ownby dies after a long illness at age 87 on February 18, 1944. A Los Angeles native, he married Anna M. Salkeld in 1880, moved to Lordsburg New Mexico, joined the Church of Christ, Knights of Pythias, and served Hidalgo County as Commissioner and Probate Judge. He was mayor for two terms and his 63 years of marriage was a model of home happiness. Funeral at Church of Christ with Minister Percy F. Krewson preaching on Psalm 23.

Accident Prevention Red Cross Course To Be Here

Alton A. Powell announces that Mr. Low of Kansas City will conduct a Red Cross Home and Farm Accident Prevention instructor course February 21 to 26. The 15 hour program runs five 3 hour sessions in the evening for 16 to 36 local volunteers, at no charge, with class at the high school building at 8 p m on Tuesday February 21.

One of Our Loved Pioneers in New Mexico Obituary

A tribute recalls Pioneer Grant of Shakespeare and Rock area who died in Portland Maine after a broken leg and hospital stay. Born November 28, 1864 in Wentworth Maine, his autobiography was published February 1, 2044. His memory will be filed in Hidalgo County Library records.

Mrs. J. O. Saffold, wife of Capt. Saffold at Lordsburg Army Camp, had James Nance trap cross fox skins and Charles Ray tan them. She made a jacket and cap from the feet skins, plus a lynx coat tanned by Ray, valued in New York at twelve to sixteen hundred dollars.

First Lady Hostess Dines With State Leader at Hidalgo Grill

On Wednesday at one oclock Mrs Ernest J Short wife of the mayor acted as denial hostess to Mrs John J Dempsey wife of Governor Dempsey at the Hidalgo Grill. A bouquet of carnations adorned the table and the guest list included Mrs Winters and other prominent locals. Mrs Winters gave the First Lady of the state a corsage of white gardenias.

The Knights of Pythias will stage a patriotic program honoring the order's founding and the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln with Rev W H Ray and Lloyd Butterfield among the honored. Court Term Adds Jury Win For Oil Claim

Judge Marshal held a weekly term with one jury case George Richins vs Southern Pacific. Plaintiff George claimed oil spill damaged land. Forrest Sanders represented him. The jury awarded $372. RAF air gunner earns Oak Leaf Cluster for courage

Staff Sergeant Kerr of Lordsburg New Mexico earns an Oak Leaf Cluster for courage and skill as he completed a fifth combat bomber mission over Europe. He joined the RAF April 16 1942 after being a rancher and attending Lordsburg High School and New Mexico Base College.

Chairman Montague Reports Ball Fund Totals

Chairman Eugene Montague presents the figures for the President's Birthday Ball and related activities that grew the anti tuberculosis fund. totals show receipts of 592.54 with 87.24 paid out including 31.69 tax. local events provided 351.86 from Lordsburg and Army dances and 102.80 from Virden and Animal dances. basketball added 16.28 and a 5.00 cash donation. half the net receipts 511.30 or 255.65 goes to the National fund and the same amount retained locally for emergencies.

DeMoss Hospital Records Five Newborns on Lincoln's Birthday

Governor explores Banner Mine to aid 40 trapped miners

American Red Cross Support for Servicemen and Blood Drives

The American Red Cross stood with the fighting forces over the last year. Volunteers aided military and naval hospital patients, aided re adjustment to civilian life, and helped collect millions of pints of blood for life saving plasma. The Red Cross war fund drive must continue.
