Airplane Crash Kills Hightower Party In Fog Shock

Wilbur E. Hightower vice president and director of Banner Mining Company and president of a major Oklahoma bank perished in a private plane crash en route from Oklahoma City to Washington DC. Five aboard died including his daughter and co-pilot. Plane owned by Leslie Fain. Funeral notices follow.

City of Lordsburg Buys More Government Bonds

At a regular City Council meeting the council unanimously ordered the purchase of ten thousand dollars worth of Government Bonds series 6 to aid the Fourth War Loan Drive. City Clerk Judie Clementa notes the bonds come from profits of public utilities, bringing total purchases to twenty seven thousand dollars. The clerk reports 657 water takers and 546 gas customers.

Notice to autoists states brake and light stickers for the first period in 1944 are due January 1 and must be secured at once. Drivers licenses due January 1. those lacking both face prosecution. Burleson Charged With Vehicle Theft Case In Court

Deputy U S Marshal Dennis Rutland brought Kermit Burleson before Commissioner Holt after noon Tuesday. Burleson, a colored man, faced charges of violating the National Vehicle Theft Act for bringing a stolen car from California to New Mexico. Plea of guilty was entered with Sheriff Allen and State Police Bradford noted in the pickup.

Mrs. M. Pride Dies in Lordsburg Hospital Funeral

Funeral services were held February 8 in Deming for Mrs. M F Pride who died February 6 at Lordsburg Hospital after a brief illness. The Deming resident since 1900 she leaves husband three children four grandchildren and a sister and three brothers. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery Deming.

Boy Scout Week Marks 84th Anniversary Observance

Boy Scout Week runs Tuesday through Monday, celebrating the 84th anniversary of the movement. Since its 1910 founding more than 11,400,000 men and boys have been involved, with over 1,576,000 Scouts Cubs and adult volunteers currently enrolled. Lordsburg joins the nationwide observance.

Red Cross Instructors Course to Be Held Here

Memorial Service for Mrs Alice Carroll in Silver City

Mrs Emma Muir and Mrs Luella Clark attended Silver City Chapter No 3 O E S last Monday evening for a regular meeting with initiation. A memorial service honored Mrs Alice M Carroll the third Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of New Mexico 1903 1904 who lived many years in Albuquerque and died in Hillsboro January 11 1944 at age 94.

DeMoss Hospital Reports Nurses Attend Home Return

Mrs. P M Ewing is sent home from DeMoss Hospital on Wednesday. Judge B B Ownby’s condition improves after Dr DeMoss performs a left leg amputation six inches below the knee for a seriously infected foot. The 87 year old pioneer felt no pain due to intravenous anesthesia. Recovery is hoped to be rapid as the infection was the worst affliction.
