State highway officials presented preliminary road figures to Hidalgo County Commissioners showing a minimum quality road from Muir Overpass to the Phelps Dodge smelter would cost 146 000 to 203 000 depending on the route. The study notes no drainage or surfacing included.
Council of Governments member Bill Harrison offered to help Hidalgo County draft a comprehensive plan at the February 8 meeting. He cited a $1,000 local share and urged inclusion in the 1973 74 budget while also calling for needs for the manpower and health programs.
Lordsburg will host the February meeting of the Southwest New Mexico Resource Conservation and Development Council on Feb 22 in the Hidalgo County Courthouse courtroom. Committees meet at 10 a.m., with four county council full meeting at 1 p.m. Public welcome to attend and work on community improvement projects with members including Bill Harrison, J T McMillan, Doc Campbell, Lewis Putnam, Buddy Allred, Clint Johnson, Mitzi Fortenberry, John Higbie, Ruth Bounds, and Art Salas among others.
The Chamber of Commerce announced that most businesses in Lordsburg will close Monday in observance of Washington's Birthday, affecting shoppers and local commerce.
The extension manpower office in Deming now serves Hidalgo County residents with Willie Lujan continuing as head for Luna County and Javier Vargas assisting Deming operations for Hidalgo. Employers are urged to submit job orders to 301 S. Gold or call 546-7001 or toll free 800-432-6834 with no hiring fees.
Hidalgo Library announces a Friends of the Library group to support library programs, seek gifts and endowments, advocate state library legislation, and offer volunteer help. An organizational meeting is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the library. A surplus book program will place books in local sites for public borrowing or keeps.
