Mobile Home Deadline Nears in Hidalgo County
Hidalgo County residents who own mobile homes must register with the assessor before the deadline to comply with a new property declaration law. After registration, the unit is taken to the DMV for tagging, then reassessed for tax purposes. The tax is computed from a statutory formula, with adjustments over the next two years. Buvens Wins Special School Board Seat by Wide Margin
Gilbert A. Buvens scored a surprising victory in a three candidate special school board race. He led with 370 votes while John Atkinson had 108 and Felipe Alvarez 91. Buvens carried all three polling places and led 569 total votes cast with about 64 percent. Culberson did not seek re election.

Lordsburg Council Approves Final HUD Housing Contract
The Lordsburg City Council approved a consolidated annual contributions contract with HUD for a 100 unit low income housing project. Units include 42 one bed, 32 two bed, 18 three bed, and eight four bed homes on 24 acres with rents around 45 dollars monthly. The project spans 20 years to full city ownership. A 75 foot sign project at the east side will cost 450 dollars monthly for 60 months. The council also OKed five elderly housing units under federal housing program.
