John Robertson, manager of Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce, reminds Liberal readers the Annual Chamber Banquet will be held Friday March 31 at 7 p.m. in the LHS Cafetorium. The guest speaker is from the University of New Mexico. Citizen of the Year nominations are coming in at a good pace, with a Feb 15 deadline.
A four-member panel from Amerind, Maxwell Museum, National Park Service, and Santa Fe Museum of NM met with the RC & D Mimbres Museum Task Force in Silver City to decide which site—Silver City Deming or Lordsburg—should host a regional Mimbreno Indian museum. They toured sites around Arenas Valley Fort Bayard Santa Rita Store and areas near Lordsburg while weighing logistics, funding, and the museum's primary educational mission over tourism. The RC & D task force, formed in 1976, seeks to curb artifact export by establishing a local museum that coordinates research and serves as a repository for finds.

Silver City lawyer Asa Kelly Jr. announced his bid for the Democratic nomination for sixth District Attorney. A former assistant to the late E C Serna, Kelly cites 27 years as an attorney and five years in the district. he argues the DA presents police evidence to the court while juries and judges decide guilt and sentence. He lives with his wife Frances and son Mike.
Lordsburg Municipal School Board approved donating surplus used furniture mainly desks to Coyame Chil Mexico after a letter from Mayor Jesus Laeza Montes. The vote supported broader programs with Deming and other districts to recycle usable items rather than discard them.
State Board of Education granted full accreditation to Lordsburg Municipal Schools on January 26 after prior withholding over a missing Special Education teacher. Superintendent Dr. Joel Price noted the district now operates with two Special Education classes in one room served by two teachers and two aides.
With the city election near, candidates speak on why they run. Glenn Dorsett, independent mayoral candidate, pledges outreach to all voters and emphasizes nine years on the Chamber of Commerce plus two years on the city council. New figures will be submitted and construction may begin if acceptable. otherwise new bids will be sought. The board also budgeted 35000 in federal anti recession funds for basic services, started plans for the Virden community center, and reviewed road projects to be completed this year.
