Mavericks Seek Payback At Animas In Friday District Clash

Animas High School routed Lordsburg Mavericks 75-58 on their home floor last Friday in District 6-AA action. This Friday Lordsburg travels to Animas for a revenge bid with junior varsity at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity game.

Playas Road Plan Presented To Highway Commissioner

Hidalgo County officials urged a direct Lordsburg to Playas road at a Las Cruces meeting with State Highway Commissioner Paul Rader. The Playas Road would cut a major 53 mile trip roughly in half and was noted among several county projects for future funding.

Eleven file for offices in Lordsburg city election

Eleven candidates filed for the Lordsburg City Elections to be held March 7. By 5 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 31, contests for mayor and three council seats were assured. Mayor candidates include Alan A. Koff Felipe Alvarez and Glenn Dorsett. Ward Three two year seat Gilbert C. Mora faces incumbent Sherrilyn Arredondo. Ward Three four year Joyce A Baxter faces Maura Rice. Ward One Richard W. Allen unopposed after Harold Jorgenson did not run. Ward Two Eugene P. Noce unopposed. Ward Four Donald Frazier seeks re election against Pablo A. Diaz. Municipal Judge Jesus J. Estrada seeks re election with no opposition. Progress Party tickets include Koff Allen Noce and Diaz. Incumbents not up for re election are Harry Heath and William Oliver. Mayor Warren Ted White, councilman Harold Jorgenson and Bobby Bivens did not file.

Trucking Firm Eyes Lordsburg Expansion For El Paso Line

A Texas based trucking firm, Merchants' Fast Motor Lines, is surveying Lordsburg Deming Las Cruces and Anthony for new El Paso to Phoenix service. Dwight Ferguson says a commission agent will be opened if approval is granted, with offices to follow in Lordsburg and three other communities. Lordsburg is currently served by CNC and Whitfield lines from Silver City.

Hachita Water System Fails to Meet EPA Standards

The EPA says Hachita's water system violated the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulations with September and October samples exceeding the coliform limit. A notice to the public within 14 days and a bill insert is required. The Animal Board of Education will meet February 9 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss reasonable notice under the open meeting law. public invited.

Tax Exemptions Due By February For Hidalgo Veterans

Hidalgo County veterans must claim their annual military service tax exemption by February 28. Visit the assessor’s office with the Liability certificate to qualify. State law allows up to $2,000 of taxable property value exempt from ad valorem tax for eligible veterans or their unmarried surviving spouses.

Sixth Judicial District Report Shows Rising Case Load

The Sixth Judicial District covering Grant Luna and Hidalgo shows a 153 percent rise in annual caseload over 13 years. In 1977 the district filed 1739 cases excluding juvenile or traffic matters with domestic relations the largest category.

Crawford Votes Split On $1.9 Million Feed Bill

Hidalgo County lawmaker Rep. Von Rue Crawford, a Republican, casts three House votes on a $1.9 million funding bill. He bets no on a GOP move to cut funds, yes on final passage but short of the two thirds, and no again on the reconsideration. The measure advances to the Senate for possible amendments and a potential second chance to approve the emergency clause.
