Tax Study committee eyes reform on mobile homes and truck tax
The 13 member Tax Study Committee recessed after four sessions and will resume hearings Monday January 3 shaping recommendations for a 30 day legislative session opening January 18. A revised bill would allow mobile homes to be taxed by property jurisdiction with a $5 annual registration fee. A major truck tax increase proposed by the Legislative Finance Committee could add about 6.5 million dollars yearly. Deputy State Auditor Earl Davidson notes possible Purchases Act violations in gasoline bidding at Belen Schools. Gov Bruce King opposes El Paso Natural Gas curtailment proposals and asks UNM to study potential economic costs. Oil production in New Mexico fell about 9.2 percent from 1970 to 1971 January-September totals. The Corporation Commission schedules hearings including Metropolitan Ambulance Service at Albuquerque on January 25 in Santa Fe.

New Federal Work Registration for Food Stamp Recipients
Health and Social Services and Employment Security officials announce a Jan 3 1972 effective rule requiring all able bodied Food Stamp recipients aged 18 to 65 to register for employment. Exemptions include caregivers, students, full time workers, disabled individuals, and certain self employed. 12 000 to 15 000 new registrants expected. interviews, referrals, and wage guidelines apply.

State income tax forms to be mailed in two waves
The New Mexico Bureau of Revenue will mail 1971 personal income tax forms by mid January with two mailing rounds. About one third of taxpayers receive returns in late December and the rest by January 15. Corporate and other tax forms arrive before year end due to the 1971 Revenue Act delay. IRS began printing in November and will mail 1040 forms just after Christmas. State and Hidalgo County offices close Friday December 31. First National Bank of Lordsburg closes at 2 pm.

Man Found Dead in Railroad Culvert
The body of Anthony Clapton of Rush Springs Okla was found last Saturday evening in a culvert under the railroad tracks opposite the Cory Penn service station on East Railroad Ave. Coroner Dr J H Baxter ruled death due to exposure and estimated the man had been dead at least 24 hours.

Housing Project Work To Be Resumed
Pyramid Heights and contractors Lockwood Modern Construction Company and Amcon International say construction will resume in January to complete 22 rental units in Lordsburg. The project began two years ago as low income housing but halted after the City Council withdrew from the program. The plan now converts the site to rental housing amid high investment and housing demand.

Santa Claus Visits Lordsburg Children
The Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce announced winners in the Christmas Home Lighting contest Benito Ramon Martinez first Oscar B Gutierrez second and Lawrence Medina third. A City-Wide Pre Christmas Sale drawing awarded Janett Kelley Ace Caillouette Clara Noling Naoma Gruwell Angela Martinez and Michael Randall. About 100 people welcomed Santa at the airport last Thursday and he visited the community Christmas Tree beside the Masonic Hall handing out cookies and candy from John Atkinson Sunbeam distributor and Tom's Candies. The merchants who participated in the City-Wide Sale were thanked for their cooperation making the event a distinct success.
