New Mexico lawmakers weigh university bonds and school funding

The University Study Committee backs a 10 million dollar library bond issue payable over five years to state universities. A 42.5 million bond for university capital improvements was approved in 1966, with 19 million still unissued. The panel backs a study to report to the 1973 Legislature and considers a graduated full time equivalent funding model. Also moves on bank branch changes in Capitan and Ruidoso with approvals and pending actions. The Legislative School Study Committee seeks 12.8 million more for public schools in 1973 as tax bills face review.

Local Boys Escape Serious Injury In Odd Car Accident

Three local teenagers escaped serious injury when their car skidded from the underpass onto Railroad Ave, broke the guard rail, and dropped to the roadway below. Driver John Aquino age 18 and passengers Jimmy Vargas 17 Eddie Vargas 18 were hospitalized then released. Aquino cited for DUI and reckless driving. The other two cited for riding with an intoxicated driver. City Police Samuel Perea and Chad Richardson investigated.

Bank Distributes Drug and Alcohol Driving Safety Booklet

The First National Bank of Lordsburg distributes an educational booklet on how alcohol and drugs affect driving to students at Lordsburg and Animal High Schools. It cites that half of car accident deaths involve drinking drivers and notes serious risk when drugs are involved.

Community Tree Set Up On Main Street by City and Chamber

City employees and Chamber of Commerce personnel brought a forest tree to the lot beside the Masonic Hall on Main Street and set it up last weekend. Chamber officers directors and members decorated the tree.

Dugan Tarango Middle School Dedicated in Lordsburg

A Dec 16 dedication ceremony in the Dugan Tarango Middle School gym honored Ben Dugan and Magdalene Tarango, with remarks by Mrs. June Hill and attendance from families, civic groups, and school officials. The buildings were opened to the public afterward, with decorated rooms and a Christmas mood.

Lions Club wraps gifts for Boys Ranch boys in 43 package

Lordsburg Lions Club members gathered at Lehman's Department Store to wrap 43 gift sets for Boys Ranch near Belen. Each package included a shirt and pants with a sex unspecified item. Lehman's supplied gifts at little or no profit and Whitfield Transportation and manager James Hand provided transport to Belen.

Los Alamos Woman Named County Environmentalist

Miss Martha Swickard is appointed environmentalist for the District Health Department and assigned to Hidalgo County. She replaces James Cureton who resigned and will visit the Lordsburg office next Wednesday. She will reside in Deming and work in Luna County, while Dale Readel covers Lordsburg from the Silver City office during the interim.

Robbery at Cash and Carry Grocery Nets $800

Mrs. Audelina Renteria was robbed Sunday at 6:40 p.m. by an armed man in a red ski mask who demanded all bills and fled in a blue car with about $800. Police halted a man near Railroad Ave, but he had marijuana and was not the suspect.

Sun Princess To Be Honored With Tea At Lordsburg Club

Cathy Spurgeon, a 1970 Lordsburg High School graduate, will be honored as Sun Princess at a tea Sunday December 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lordsburg Golf Club. She is the 25th Princess to represent the city since 1937. Cathy is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jimmie Spurgeon and is engaged to Russell Tharp with a January 28 wedding planned.
