In a New Year greeting the Vollmars thank customers for their patronage in 1948 and extend wishes for happiness health and prosperity in 1949. They express hope for a continued pleasant friendship and good will for all.
Rain clouds lasting three days brought relief to ranchers in Southwest New Mexico, preventing dust storms and aiding cattle feed and water. Elders call it the best rain in years while newcomers note unprecedented rainfall spreading from the Pacific to East Texas and from Chihuahua City to the Canadian border.
Nationally 100000 new elementary teachers are expected for 1948 49 while only 12000 were prepared last year. In New Mexico 964 new teachers started last year but only 172 came from state training schools. About 484 arrived from other states and the rest relocated or were reassigned. Enrollment shows 5000 more children in school than last year with birth-rate increases likely to continue five years. Every citizen should be concerned about finding adequately qualified teachers.
Beta Sigma Phi members gathered December 17 at the Freeman McWhorter ranch home with Susie Kimbley as hostess. Ten girls were seated at a Christmas table, a family style chicken dinner served, gifts and linen handkerchief favors distributed. Games of rummy and bridge followed. Mrs. Joe Dunagan won high bridge score and Mrs. Alice Steen high rummy score.
A hen laying 200 eggs annually transfers about 14 times as much calcium into the eggs as remains in her body. The fact highlights how egg production drives mineral allocation in poultry biology.
Christmas weekend in Lordsburg saw multiple open houses with festive decorations and greetings. Notable hosts included Mr and Mrs Henry Ellison Sr on Christmas Eve and guests such as Mr and Mrs Geo P Jeffus and Attorney and Mrs E Forrest Sanders on Christmas Day, along with Mr and Mrs Ralph Clark and Lewis Green.
The annual meeting of District 1 of the New Mexico Federation of Business and Professional Women's clubs will be held in Deming at the Country Club on Sunday January 23 at 1 00 p m. Dinner is $2 per plate with Deming club as hostesses. Lordsburg members are urged to attend and reservations are due by January 15. The local club’s next meeting is January 13 with Mrs Thelma Ross as chairperson.
December 30th benefits set aside for the Community Christmas tree fund. Lordsburg town team vs high school team play two games at the school gym starting 7 30 pm. Local fire department sponsors urge strong attendance to help cover the deficit.
Mr and Mrs J R Sanchez of this city celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary today Thursday December 30 Sanchez a well known grocery store owner in Lordsburg He built a new store at 401 East St Gonzalez of Morenci Ariz visit to attend the Silver Wedding anniversary of her parents.
Funeral services for John B Maxwell 89 were held at St Josephs Catholic church with Father Gary of El Paso officiating. Interment followed at Shakespeare cemetery Tuesday at 4 p m. Maxwell born Las Cruces New Mexico 1859 lived in Clifton and Lordsburg. He is survived by son Pete and daughter Adelina of Lordsburg. Pallbearers named Altuna Biera Noce Vasquez Ferguson Garcia. Heather Mortuary managed arrangements.
The Community Sing Singers from Lordsburg churches and friends meet at the Assembly of God church at 6th and Texas on Sunday night for a monthly singing event at 8 45 honoring Christian fellowship. All ages welcome to sing and share in praise without denominational promotion.
Miss Mildred Nordeen’s first grade class staged a Christmas program in the Central gym on Friday morning December 17. Parents and friends attended as the teacher departed for Christmas vacation. The Chamber of Commerce judged the Christmas Lighting Contest with J W Taylor taking first prize for a church window scene. Leo Cohen earned second prize for a full front Christmas Snow scene, and C E Speer was third with Santa Claus deer rein deer display. Fourth and fifth went to F R Dunagan and Frank Rice. Judges were Pat Robinson of Tucson Carl Horst Jr of El Paso and J Tomlinson of Duncan.
Masons held the installation of newly elected and appointed officers at a Monday evening meeting. Rex Kipp was installed worshipful master with Alvin Parker senior warden, H J Rolfe treasurer, George Jeffus secretary, N Davidson senior deacon, John Bradford junior deacon, J A Foster senior steward, Edwin Brown junior steward, George Trimble tyler, J L Augustine chaplain, Sam H Gass marshal, R V Traylor junior warden absent and to be installed later.
The Jr. Woman's Club held its annual Christmas party on December 20 at the club building. A tray supper featured sandwiches gelatin salad appetizers nuts candy and coffee. After gifts and Monte Carlo whist the girls sang carols around the piano in a festive, well attended event led by sponsor Miss Jo Me Whorter.
The Polly Pigtails were honored at a luncheon hosted by Mrs. H. L. Scofield on Thursday afternoon. Attending were Mrs. Alan Koff and several girls who presented Mrs. Koff with a poinsettia and Mrs. Scofield with candy, then exchanged gifts and attended a free Coronado Theatre show.
