Businessmen extend Christmas greetings in Liberal issue

The Liberal presents a Christmas message from local business people praising their public spirit and wishing readers a joyous season. It notes the year and a half partnership with merchants and their sincere holiday wishes. Also announces sale of 1949 motor vehicle license plates on December 27 at the County Treasurer's office with Hidalgo County plate number 23 for 1949.

Highway Department Finishes Parking Lot Paving

The State Highway Department completed paving on Railroad Avenue parking lot leased by the city from Southern Pacific. City to mark spaces soon and police will regulate parking. Mayor and Aldermen commend the saving and plan further regulations to maximize benefit for motorists.

Drifters and Hobos Runtime in Town Stirs City

Dozens of drifters and hobos have flooded the town, overwhelming police and prompting warnings to lock homes and cars. Some travel onward to the coast or back east, while others run a small racket selling ribbons or buttons and panhandling for meals.

Christmas Home Lighting Contest Attracts Many Entrants

The Liberal notes the Chamber of Commerce sponsored Christmas Home Lighting Contest draws many local residents to decorate homes and yards. Judging occurs Thursday evening with winners to be announced next week. The public is invited to tour the town decorations as a festive Christmas immersion.

Editor and family plan Christmas vacation to Los Angeles

The editor E Vollmar and family along with Mgr Warren Jones and Mrs A L Jones and others will leave early Friday for Los Angeles to spend Christmas and New Year with relatives. Next week's Liberal will be published by Mr and Mrs Curtis T Martin as they take over during the holidays.

Santa visits Lordsburg for annual Christmas program

The Lordsburg Fire Department hosts the annual Community Christmas tree program Friday eve in the Central school gym at 8 pm. Carol singing leads to Santa's arrival who will give candy apples and nuts to kids under 12. F A Chavez will play Santa and lead carolers from local churches.

Texas Arizona Motor Freight Truck Burns Near Lordsburg

A Texas Arizona Motor Freight trailer and its contents valued in the thousands burned on the highway about six miles east of Lordsburg Sunday evening. The driver halted the eastbound truck and alerted authorities. Alan Koff arrived with an airport fire truck and extinguished the blaze. The tractor remained undamaged and over $1000 in tires was saved.

Lordsburg Post Office Opens Christmas Morning

The Lordsburg post office will operate from 9 to 11 o clock on Christmas morning to hand out mail and packages only. Santa will arrive at 11 in front of Mr. Chavez s store to distribute candy nuts and fruit to children under 12.

Roy Melugin Jr Wins Monark Bicycle in Local Contest

Roy Melugin Jr son of local teachers won a Monark bicycle in the Lords burg Liberal subscription contest this week. Thirty two entrants submitted reports to the Liberal office with directors from Virden and Animas assisting. He finished with 157000 points after turning in 176 subscriptions and more than half were new. The Liberal management thanks workers and subscribers and asks anyone not receiving the paper to call 35.
