Montague, Former Lordsburg Postmaster, Dies at 72

Eugene Montague longtime Lordsburg resident and former postmaster died suddenly Wednesday at 72. Born February 16 1889 in Bandera Texas he worked for Cananea Cattle Co in Mexico 1908 1913 and for Senator A B Fall in New Mexico before moving to Lordsburg in 1914. He served as acting postmaster in 1933 and retired 1959 the first Lordsburg postmaster to do so. He held many community roles including precinct Democratic chairman Labor Commission Hidalgo County and American Legion commander. Funeral arrangements set at St Josephs Catholic Church and Heather Chapel. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery with American Legion honors.

Barbecued Venison Dinner At C P S Christmas Party

Local C P S employees held their annual Christmas party in the remodeled American Legion Hall last Friday. A buffet of barbecued venison was served with Roddy Poindexter, plant superintendent, officiating at the pit. Comic gifts and dancing followed the dinner. out of town guests included Mr and Mrs M W Davis Mr and Mrs Marvin Fuller and Mr and Mrs Charles Gray of Silver City.

El Paso prepares for its 27th Sun Carnival theme Our American Heritage with the 3rd Infantry Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps under Col. Richard M. Lee. The unit, established 1784, will march in the New Year's Day parade and perform at the queen coronation in Colonial Williamsburg.

New Post Office to Rise in Lordsburg at Shakespeare and Fourth

Postmaster McGhee says work will start after New Year on a new Lordsburg post office. Frank L. King Jr of Texarkana Texas won the contract to build and lease the building on a 13850 square foot site with 3267 square feet interior space and 976 square feet for vehicle movement. The design features insulated glass facing Shakespeare native stone walls and concrete floors with quarry tile lobby and a 500 box section. The service lobby will be counter tow with no windows and a private postmaster office. A mail flow system will speed dispatcher work.

Elks New Year’s Party And Dance Planned

Lordsburg Elks Lodge No 1813 schedules its annual New Year’s party and dance for Saturday night December 30. An orchestra from New Mexico Western College Silver City will provide dancing music starting at 9 p m.
