Elks Provide Christmas Baskets for Lordsburg Needy

Lordsburg Elks club members staged a Santa's workshop event filling nine Christmas baskets for local families. Each basket included potatoes beans carrots cabbage oranges grapefruit and about 15 pounds of meat. The baskets were delivered to needy residents as a charitable effort tied to the season.

R P Smith Home Wins First Prize in Christmas Decor

The Chamber of Commerce awards Sunday night honors for outdoor home decorations. Ralph P. Smith's residence takes first prize with a $10 award as lights blaze, trees glow, and Santa features light the scene. Other winners include Alvin Parker, Ben Cochran, and Cassie Martinez with prize money ranging from $7.50 to $2.50.

Regional Basketball Playoffs Approved for Eight Teams

The New Mexico High School Athletic Assn. approves regional tournaments to reduce the state field to eight. The events will occur March 3 between district meets on Feb 24 and the state tournament on March 10. Executive secretary Morris W Ward notes the referendum passed 85 to 23 and five more districts were added.

Children of City Ciren Celebrate Christmas Theatre Party

City children from pre school to high school attended a Coronado theatre Christmas party hosted by First National Bank and Mrs S E Allen. Four hours of free entertainment included Tim Holt film Bandit Ranger and several others from major studios with snacks like popcorn and apples provided. Roy Melugin Jr of Clovis stayed with Wilbur Gene Simpson at the Newsome home over Christmas holidays.

Snow White and Seven Dwarfs to Appear Here

The New York company presents a musical stage version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the High School Auditorium in Lordsburg on Wednesday January 17 at 8 p m. The production features costumes scenery and singing designed for families and promises laughs and romance.

March of Dimes Campaign Opens Jan 15

The 1951 March of Dimes with slogan Lend Me A Hand will start January 15 in Lordsburg and nationwide. Larry McKenzie, 12, crippled by polio, represents the effort aiding about 4 000 people last year as polio struck over 100 000 in three years and cost the foundation about 58 million pounds.

Mechem Inaugurated as New Mexico Governor in Santa Fe

Edwin L. Mechem, first Republican governor in twenty years, to be sworn in at noon by Chief Justice Eugene D. Lujan in the New Mexico House of Representatives. An overflow crowd expected, with public viewing outside and statewide radio broadcast of the ceremony.

Lordsburg Youths Enlist In Armed Services

Lordsburg youths respond to the world situation by enlisting in the U S Armed Services. John Kipp joins the Navy, Bennie Frias enters the Air Force, and Raymond George also joins the Navy. Frias will be inducted immediately, while Kipp and George have a 30 day extension.
