World War II hero Frank Rigney shot down a German fighter while aboard a Boeing Flying Fortress. He damaged two engines and critical flight controls but bravely brought his plane home and slowed for landing by flying through tree tops.
Mrs June Redford mourns the loss of Captain James Redford who died December 11 in France. He was 24, son of Redford of Tot Springs and Bess Redford of El Paso. A World War II graduate of Cathedral High and New Mexico State College, he served in Brownwood, Austin and Fort Bliss before going overseas. He married Miss June July 4 prior to his deployment and is survived by his son Jimmie and his parents. The family traveled to Paso to be with Mrs. Bess Redford after the news.
P W Camp Lordsburg announces promotions and service details for soldiers Jaramillo Estrada and Svoboda. Jaramillo entered the army in 1942 and is stationed in Kentucky. Estrada joined in 1943 with basic training at Fort Knox and is now with the Prisoner of War camp staff. Svoboda was promoted to corporal and served since 1941, with furlough to follow.
Mr and Mrs Tom J Mayfield and Ellen celebrated Christmas with relatives in Las Cruces.
Mrs. Ella Cardell reports from the War Department that Pfe. Murel Buck Cardell aged 19 was killed December 11 in Germany. Born in Plain View Texas he attended schools in Lordsburg and Bedrock and entered the Army March 18 1944. He is survived by his mother six sisters five brothers and his father W F Cardell who lives in Arizona.
Silver City residents sponsored a turkey dinner for American Soldiers at the Lordsburg Prisoner of War Camp. The Gremlin Club organized the event and the town has previously donated furniture games and magazines. Colonel Napoleon Rainbolt expressed the camp's gratitude.
A Christmas party for American Servicemen at Lordsburg Prisoner of War Camp on December 22 was a big success despite the 50 to 18 loss to the Douglas Air Base basketball team. Santa distributed gifts and local residents donated presents, with the Douglas Airmen staying for the dance and gift distributions. Colonel Rainbolt thanked Lordsburg residents for their support during the servicemen's tour of duty.
Harber Heather CPM and Mrs Heather arrived Thursday from San Diego to spend Harber's 30 day furlough with family. Mr and Mrs Jack Heather hosted Mr and Mrs Georgy Ewan and son Harber and Mrs Heather and Mrs Dora Mullins at Christmas dinner.
Mrs C B Austin entertained at luncheon on Thursday with guests Mrs J 3 Clark Mrs R E Buvens and Mrs W F Winters. Bridge followed the meal.
John D. Bingaman, district OPA director, congratulates Mayor Clyde Tingley and Albuquerque for reduced city owned car mileage. City cut from 677,842 to 387,410 in nine months, 1941 to 1944, a 57 percent drop under the mileage conservation program.
New Mexico stove dealers and distributors will receive additional ration certificates to stock gas heating stoves, while oil heating and cooking stoves stay under current ceilings. Tobin, district OPA rationing representative, says the change lets dealers align orders with winter and spring needs before the peak season, though stocks remain well below normal.
Churches in the area publish Sunday School and worship times. Hale and Smith lead services at one church with midweek prayers. St Joseph Catholic Church shares grade-based religious instruction and Masses at a POW camp. Church of Christ notes Bible School and evening services. Nazarene lists Sunday School at 9 45 and N Y P activities with midweek prayer.
USDA analyst projects 1945 meat prices at or above 1044 levels with total meat output below 1944 by about 2 billion pounds. Hog prices expected higher due to pork purchases by WFA and the Armed Forces and reduced hog marketing in early 1945. Beef purchases by the Armed Forces likely exceed 1944 in early 1945. cattle feeding may rise with better corn supplies. feed availability remains strong while calf slaughter may be the smallest in the last decade.

Lordsburg, New Mexico honored Col John T Muir founder of a fund for the high school band. The First National Bank president presented a check to Secretary Holt with future additions promised to sustain perpetual support. The gift will bear the inscription Col Muir Gift on instruments as the band grows. Mrs Thelma Rows and the Girls Glee Club serenaded the colonel in appreciation, marking a joyous community moment for the schools.
Prices received by farmers edged higher for the month ending November 16, lifting the index to 106 percent of the 1910 14 base and near wartime peak. Prices paid also rose slightly, with a 171 percent parity index versus the 1910 14 average. the year ago figures were 194 and 160 respectively.
The district OPA office won a federal court judgment for 6401 against Levers Brothers of Roswell, wholesale liquor dealers. They were charged with selling whiskey over the ceiling price to retailers. The judgment amount was three times the identified overcharge.
Registration of rental property in Belen is ongoing and should finish by January 15. Geo. Taylor, district OPA rent executive, urges landlords to register rooms used for the holidays and permanent rentals. He notes Belew as an exception to rent control due to a local housing shortage from railroad workers.
Lt Harold N Wittes of Brooklyn New York has been promoted to Captain at the Prisoner of War Camp Lordsburg where he serves as Assistant Dental Surgeon. He entered service in August 1943 from Camp Livingston Louisiana and was assigned to Lordsburg October 11 1944. His wife Fay and daughter Phyllis live at 92 Greene Avenue Brooklyn. Before joining the Army he practiced dentistry in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
Lt John H. Baker of Battle Creek Michigan is promoted to First Lieutenant at the Prisoner of War Camp Lordsburg where he serves as Camp Supply Officer and helped reactivate the camp in October His wife Dorothea and daughters Louise and Marie live at 26 Cherry Street Battle Creek His son John Jr serves in the Navy and he joined the service July 17 1942 after working with the Quartermaster at Fort Custer Michigan
A large family gathering at Reuben Gale's home marked Christmas with twenty five members present. Absentees included Arvil and Lester Gale serving in the military, Raymond Gale in the Navy, and Leona Gale with her husband and baby in California. Ray and Vera returned from Yuma and Douglas, Harry from Los Angeles, and Laree and Bill Smith from Lordsburg. The group shared roast chicken, played games, sang, and Pa Gale offered a prayer for all American service members.
This Sunday morning will be the last opportunity to attend church this year. The house was packed last Sunday evening and the offering for orphans will be announced Sunday. Rev. F. R. Poage invites all to attend and hear the message.
State Policeman John Bradford warns car and truck owners that the first 1945 inspection stickers must be affixed to windshields. Drivers licenses can now be obtained at City Hall and penalties await noncompliance with the new law.
Wholesalers will add mark ups to costs for wholesale ceiling prices under an Office of Economic Stabilization directive. The change aims to narrow the farm to consumer price gap, potentially boosting fruit and vegetable sales for farmers. A 1940s context note cites onions as an example of prior misalignment between farm prices and retail costs.
Farmers should verify the ceiling price before buying a used car. The OPA says farmers acting in business use are not consumers and cannot recover if charged. Check fair trade-in value and avoid forced time payments or cash-side deals, as these violate ceiling rules.

Miss Joana Simmons and Jammer Allen wed on Tuesday afternoon in Silver City at the County Court House. The bride wore white wool with gardenia and carnation corsage. attended by family including Tate LaVerne of Los Angeles. The couple, now residing in Hidalgo Courts, plan a future home.
The four o clock Thursday afternoon wedding of Mia Josephine and James Br Reif was performed by Rev. Sidney W. Male. Attendants included Winnifred Pankey, mother of the bride, and William Reed. The couple plans to reside in Tucson next month.
Miss Marshallene Goodsell of Santa Ve visits her grandmother Mrs Fran Marshall and other relatives. She is now secretary to General Mc Afee at the Military hospital.

Secretary Willard EB Holt is advised his grandson Robert Holt MacFarlane son of Lt Commander Frank C MacFarlane overseas was killed in an aviation accident in Florida. Mrs Roy Kerr and Mrs A A Richards will host the Auxiliary of the American Legion at the Woman's Club next Wednesday at 7 30 PM for the regular meeting.
Mrs. R. M. Reynolds and Miss Betty Reynolds traveled to El Paso yesterday. Miss Betty will serve as Lordsburg's Princess during the Sun Carnival on New Year's Day.

A new ceiling fixes barrows and gilts at 14.75 per hundredweight with Chicago basis effective December 14 1944. Sows stags and boars are capped at 75 per hundredweight under the same ceiling for barrows and gilts.

The marriage of Migs daughter of Mr and Mrs L Bradberry and Hal Hailey of Saint ville Utah was conducted by Bishop Albert Till. Only immediate family attended. The bride wore blue with pink carnations and a grandmother's gold brooch. Talley, a Public Service Company employee, serves at Lordsburg Prisoner of War. He previously served 27 months in the Aleutians with the Ale Corps and Anti Aircraft. The couple plans to live with the bride’s parents in Utah until Hailey finishes Army service, then move to Montville Utah.
Card of Thanks expresses gratitude for condolences and flowers after the death of husband and father Joe Guzman. The Guzman family thanks friends and especially Southern Pacific employees for support.
The high school Christmas dance was held in the school auditorium last Saturday evening with about eighty students present. Chaperones included JT Mayfield, Mrs Moselle Measecar, Mrs Thelma Bas, Mrs Helen Green, Mr a Farmer, Burke Stiles, and Bonar.
