Tax study panel axed four major rate hikes in New Mexico

The Legislative Tax Study Committee rejected four proposed tax increases after three days of hearings. Items dropped include motor vehicle excise tax rise, gross receipts tax on agricultural implements, nonhighway vehicles or planes, and the removal of a gross receipts tax on chemical agents. The committee plans to continue work amid a tight state budget outlook and possible 30 day session starting January 18.

Jury rules for Matotan in Lordsburg contract case

A Lordsburg jury awarded William Matotan and Associates 25000 for engineering services on the 1969 water and sewer expansion project. Matotan sought 48794.87 plus fees, claiming payment from bond proceeds and a federal grant. Evidence showed a March 6 1969 contract and termination a year later after bond failure.

Dugan Tarango Middle School Open House Planned

The new Dugan Tarango Middle School will host an open house on Thursday December 16 from 6 30 p m to 8 p m A dedication service starts at 6 30 p m in the gym followed by tours of the facility The teachers will greet visitors and the student council will direct them to different areas The public is invited to attend both the dedication and the building visit.

Downtown Lordsburg Speed Limit Drops to 30 MPH

The City of Lordsburg requested a lower downtown speed limit and the State Highway Department reduced the limit from 35 to 30 mph along Railroad Ave from Chester St to Penn St. Signs reflecting the new limit are in place and enforceable.

Thieves Break Into Elks Building

Burglars broke into the Elks Club east of town on Monday morning tearing a wall, removing a safe that yielded no money after being opened. Two men used tracks, and three coin operated machines were robbed of about $15 according to Roddy Poindexter. No cigarettes or liquor were taken.

Mavericks Win Two and Fall to Deming in District Basketball

Lordsburg Mavericks split games in December, beating San Simon Longhorns 71-62 led by Gabriel Guerrero 22 points, Joaquin Marquez and Sam Cureton. They then beat Hatch 69-49, with David Garcia 18 points 17 rebounds and Joa Quin 17 points 19 rebounds. A 103-78 loss to Deming followed, with Sam 19 and Kelly Saucedo 14 and Joaquin 13 leading the team. Next they host Cliff and Duncan at home, with coach DeFoor urging strong fan support.

FBI Commends Local Police Officer for Stolen Vehicle Actions

Police Lt. Edward Looker received two FBI commendations for handling cases involving suspects driving stolen vehicles. Both incidents violated the federal Dyer Act. Special agent in charge Wesley T. Whatley praised Looker's handling of the cases.

CofC Sponsors Xmas Lighting Contest

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Christmas Home Lighting Contest with judging on December 22, 1971 by non locals. Prizes go to first second and third place. officers or directors are not eligible. The chamber also distributes "Happy Holiday" buttons to merchants and staff to brighten the season.

Apostle To Speak At Stake Conference In Safford

Spencer W. Kimball acting president of the Council of Twelve will speak at the Mt. Graham Stake Conference on December 18 and 19 in Safford. He is noted for work with American Indians and Spanish speakers and was named an apostle in 1943. The Sunday session begins at 10 a.m. at the Stake Center on Relation Street. Stake President Boyce H. Lines welcomes visitors.
