Changes In Names Should Be Reported
Newlyweds and others who changed their names last year should report their new name to the Social Security Administration. The name and Social Security numbers on tax returns are matched with those of the SSA in processing the returns. Refunds can be delayed if the name and Social Security number do not match. Another way to guard against delays is to use the peel-off identification label provided with the tax package. If the name, address, or Social Security number is incorrect, changes can be made directly on the label.
