The Liberal moves all deadlines forward by one day to accommodate Christmas falling on the usual publication day. Deadlines will shift to Monday with Tuesday publication, and readers are asked for cooperation.
Lordsburg voters will choose two new school board members in February and decide on a capital improvements levy of 2 per thousand of net taxable value for 1981 1982 and 1983. Funds will build remodel expand supply equipment and improve grounds. salaries are excluded.
Voters in the Animas School District go to the polls February 3 to elect three board members. Incumbents Shaw and Wamel face challenges in Positions 1 and 3 for six year terms, with Position 5 for four years currently held by Maestas. Filing deadlines in December and January, precincts consolidated, and absentee voting at the Lordsburg schools office.
The state of New Mexico received more than 100 million dollars from the Bureau of Land Management for activities on public lands. Thirty counties received direct payments above 200 thousand dollars, led by Lincoln County with 40 thousand. Other grants went to Hidalgo Grant Catron and Luna, while Chaves and McKinley counties also received sizable sums. The state treasury reported 52,327,443 dollars from mineral bonuses royalties and rentals for April to September 1980, with grazing fee shares added.
The Atlantic Richfield Foundation grants 50000 to the New Mexico Chapter of the Nature Conservancy to help buy 126 acres in the Gila Riparian Project in Grant County about 30 miles NW of Silver City. The fundraising goal is 200000 with a 1 to 3 match, leaving 90000 to raise from private sources by December 15 1980. The preserve will be the state’s first Conservancy owned area of national significance. The site hosts sycamore and riparian woodland plus other species including Federally Endangered Peregrine falcon Bald eagle and state endangered Zone tailed hawk Black hawk Gila woodpecker and Bell s vireo. The Nature Conservancy supports ecologically significant land nationwide with 32 state offices including Albuquerque NM.
The Department of Energy raises standard margins for gasoline dealers to 17.7 cents per gallon from December 5, with semiannual inflation adjustments. Wholesalers may boost margins to 8.6 cents and wholesaler retailers with no wholesale sale 30 days may lift to 26.3 cents. In July 1979 a fixed 15.4 cent margin was set for all stations. Consumers may call the DOE hotline for concerns.
A new local industry may begin in Hidalgo County near Cotton City to process chili using geothermal heat instead of natural gas. The project, backed by the Hidalgo Industrial Development Committee and County Commissioners, aims to boost the Animas Valley farming district with related economic benefits as design and feasibility advance. The venture is led by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hatch in cooperation with the Mirador Corporation.
The Lordsburg Public Schools will release classes for Christmas and New Year’s Friday December 19. Lunches will be served in all cafeterias and buses will run. Release times: R V T School 11 55 a m Southside 12 00 p m Central 12 25 p m Dugan Tarango 12 25 p m High School 1 00 p m. Classes resume January 5.
The State Transportation Department's Traffic Safety Bureau reports 38 fatal accidents in November causing 41 deaths, with year to date totals of 477 fatal accidents and 554 fatalities in New Mexico. Motor vehicles account for 392 deaths, pedestrians 94, motorcycles 66, and bicyclists 2. Harding County reports no fatalities by end of November, Hidalgo County had 7.
