Navy conducts series of controlled TNT blasts in southwest
Eleventh Naval District reports a series of 24 controlled TNT detonations at five sites in Arizona New Mexico California and San Clemente Island from December 15 to 17 as part of a radio propagation and ionosphere study started in 1949 led by Dr Alfred B Focke of the Navy Electronics Laboratory. Depth charges were fired on the ground across specified time windows.

Fire department battles garage blaze near Wright apartments
Firemen were called about 11 40 Tuesday morning to a fire in the garage behind the Wright apartments on Animas near 5th street. Small children are believed to have started the blaze in garbage cans near the garage. Firemen saved moving equipment owned by Mrs Cora Shay who had just returned from Los Angeles.

Safety Patrol Aids in School Traffic Control
The Central School Safety Patrol, active since 1939, is a program of selected upper elementary boys who help peers avoid street dangers. Based on Standard Rules from AAA and six national groups, members wear Sam Browne belts and badges, with captains and lieutenants chosen by seniority. they stay on the curb and do not direct traffic. Their duties include reminding classmates of safety rules and ensuring crossings occur at corners or designated points during traffic lulls.

Pair Free After Shooting Arizona Officer
Road blocks were set up at Road Forks Animas and on highway 70 by officers from Lordsburg Deming and Silver City after patrolman Wooten was shot east of Willcox Arizona. The 1950 Buick convertible carrying two Negro men shot Wooten in the arm around 12 30 pm and fled. Police pursued the car which was found abandoned near Safford Arizona about 4 00 pm. Authorities searched Graham Mountain for the pair, believed tied to a Phoenix robbery.
