Remains of Pvt Figueroa Brought Home in Lordsburg
Remains of Pvt Francisco C. Figueroa arrived in Lordsburg on December 11, 1947, the first overseas veteran to be returned to the county. Born October 28, 1924 in Portal, Arizona and long-time resident of Rodeo, New Mexico, he enlisted June 18, 1943 in Company F, 8th Infantry and died December 4, 1944 in the Battle of the Bulge after serving in the Normandy invasion. He is survived by three sisters, three brothers, and his mother, all of Rodeo. Services were held December 12.

Death Notice for S W Birchfield
S W Birchfield died early December 15 1947 after a long illness. He was born August 26 1916 in El Paso Texas and served in Pattons 1st Army through Sicily Italy France and Belgium. He attended Cumberland Law School and Chillicothe Business College and was a member of the Methodist Church. Services were held December 16 1947 at First Methodist Church with pallbearers named and music pieces listed.

Duncan boys defeated the Mavericks in a double defeat for burg High School hoopsters. The Mavericks B team lost 31 to 16 while the first teamgame stayed tight 34 rough, with a three point halftime deficit and a late lead change before Duncan pulled away 28 to 25 at the end.

Lordsburg High School teams traveled to Clifton Tuesday and won both games. Scores were 42 19 and 34 29 with Gene MacDonald scoring 10 points and Mateo Estrada eight in the two contests.

Jury Acquits Peg Leg Figueroa in Murder Trial
A jury found Peg Leg Figueroa not guilty of first degree murder in the October 28 shooting of Ventura Casares after a trial that began Monday. The defense argued self defense, noting Casares carried a knife and advanced threateningly. Witnesses included Officers English Drysdale Sanchez and Dr. Austin, with attorney E Forest Sanders for the defense.

At the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce board meeting in City Hall on Monday evening Ralph Smith was elected president for 1948. H H Bryant and H E Scofield were chosen for three year terms on the board, with Eugene Romney F A Chavez R B Ownby and J H Ellison continuing as directors.

A D Poindexter Funeral Friday in Silver City
A D Poindexter known as Hep Poindexter of Lordsburg and Silver City died in Los Angeles on December 14 1947. He will be buried Friday December 19 at 2 30 pm from the Elks Home with V F W in charge at the cemetery. He was born July 7 1905 in Larkin Texas and moved to Silver City in 1920. He worked at the American National Bank for twelve years then ran a finance business. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946 with duty in England.

The Monday performance of Mumbo-Jumbo a three act mystery farce played in the Reynolds summer home living room with a large audience at Lordsburg high school auditorium. The cast included Sarah Reynolds Shirley Vollmar John Reynolds Walter Reynolds Dick Reynolds Bernard Rawson Pee Wee Smith Melvin Bealmear Tweety Faye Nally Monahan Eugene Lee Harold Custer Jim Ewing Mrs Custer Shirley Vollmar Mr Peter Beamish Jack Ewing Kay Samedi Mabel Brown Omehandra Dr Omahandra Walter Blake Peaches Greeding June Aliman Sheriff of Hope County Daisy Ruth Whisnant and others. The teens solved the crime with help from ten year old Daisy and the performance drew praise as one of the finest plays.
