Jerry Isiah, 50, of Seattle, bound over to District Court on December 9, 1987, on one count of murder open and one count of attempted murder open in connection with the incident.
Santa Claus will visit the Lordsburg Youth Center from 6:00 to 9:00 P M on Sunday with the Lordsburg Fire Department escorting him through town. He will hand out candy to visiting children and cameras are welcome. Assisting will be the Lordsburg Optimist Club amid a separate report on a fatal stabbing and related court actions.
Lordsburg youths must qualify by December 19 at Dugan Tarango Middle School starting 9 AM for 8 to 9 10 to 11 and 12 to 13 age groups. Anitas area contest follows on January 9 1988. For information contact Ted Hopkins.
New positions for designers and engineers in the Santa Fe Deming Roswell Albuquerque Las Vegas and Grants districts are announced by the New Mexico State Personnel Office. Job descriptions are posted on the Liberal's bulletin board and available through February 7 1988.
George Forsyth was elected December 3 to represent Hidalgo Senior Citizens for another two years. He will serve as a director on the Southwestern New Mexico Area Agency on Aging.
Hidalgo County commissioners again wrestled with Sheriff Department overtime with no clear solution. Former Sheriff Billy Darnell blamed federal policy and cited on call duties, court witness days, jailhouse incidents, and late night delays on I 10 as drivers. Commissioner Veck predicted City police independence will shrink sheriff work and reduce costs, while Sheriff Lloyd Payne noted radio work will shift to the City next year, easing overtime after force separation.
The Assembly of God Church invites all to a Sunday December 20 Christmas music hour led by Katie Jimenez wife of Pastor Manual Jimenez of Abundant Life Fellowship. The service starts at 7 00 p.m. at 701 Animas Street Lordsburg offering inspiration through song.
Steven Herbert Strange 87 of Animas died Sunday in Deming. Born May 3 1900 in Duncan Arizona he lived in the region most of his life and ranched 61 years in Animas Valley. A Navy veteran he married Almeda Smith September 22 1922 in Douglas. Funeral 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bacas Heather Chapel with Rev Emil Herzog officiating. Interment Mt View Cemetery. Pallbearers Willis Walters Edward Elbrock Alfred Johnson Russell Walters Richard Moore Joe Croom. Survived by wife Almeda son Jack grandson Billy Darnell great grandson Travis Darnell and granddaughter Danielle Moore. Entrusted to Bacas Heather Funeral Chapels.
