Hidalgo County 4-H Awards Honor Local Clubs and Members
The Hidalgo County 4-H awards program at the Amer Legion Hall recognized 150 4-H girls, parents, and leaders. Medals covered public speaking, poultry, foods, dress revue, home economics, and leadership, with sponsors including Sears Roebuck Fundation, Standard Brands, General Corporation, and the Hidalgo County Farm Bureau. A bronze plaque praised the Sage and Sands Extension Club in Lordsburg for outstanding support, and a “Friend of 4-H” award went to Mr F Merrell of Virden.

Christmas Party at Coronado Theatre For Local Children
The annual Christmas show for children from Lordsburg Animal Rodeo Virden and Ha chita will be held at the Coronado Theatre on Wednesday December 23. Two shows 1:00 p.m. for younger students and 3:35 p.m. for older students. Each show runs two and a half hours with cartoons and a 90 minute western. All children are invited.

Former Local Attorney Becomes FBI Agent Retires to Join DA Team
Alton E. Warren longtime Lordsburg attorney retires from the FBI after 22 years and will join Ernest Williams as assistant district attorney for the third judicial district covering Dona Ana Lincoln and Otero counties. Warren, Texas native, resides in Las Cruces and will start January 1. He is brother of David Warren and son of D D Warren of Separ. He studied at Lordsburg High School New Mexico Military Institute Roswell Texas Tech and earned a University of Texas law degree.

Renteria Named VFW Commander Of The Month In District 4
The Veterans of Foreign Wars district meeting at La Fiesta on December 13 announced Ernesto V. Renteria as commander of the month and Jim Kinkema as quartermaster of the month. District 4, including Deming and Lordsburg, was praised for its 1965 membership drive, with Lordsburg Post 3099 leading the state. The event drew 140 members and wives with music by The Kingsmen. next district gathering is February 14 in Hatch.

Calvin Martin Dies After Heart Surgery in Phoenix
Calvin Martin, longtime rancher from the Lordsburg area, died early Thursday in a Phoenix hospital after heart surgery performed Wednesday. He was son of the late Charles C Martin former Lordsburg mayor and brother of Mrs Leslie Harvell of Lordsburg with a cousin Robert Martin of Bedrock. No funeral arrangements were available at The Liberal's press Thursday.

Citizens Warned About Roof Painters
Chief of Police C. L. Rogers warned Lordsburg residents about itinerant roof painters who may operate locally. The alert follows complaints to the Better Business Bureau from El Paso residents who say painters used motels as headquarters and driven vehicles bore out of state plates.

Jailed burglar slashes wrists in jail attempt
A 39 year old man from Troup Texas jailed for burglarizing a Catholic church attempted suicide at about 1 15 am Wednesday by slashing wrists and throat with a razor.
