Hidalgo County Commissioners approved a budget transfer to the Playas Road fund to cover easement costs. County Manager Tom Anderson will issue bids for roughly 10.5 miles of base road after securing all required easements, estimated at about $60,000.
Jose Placencia age 79 of Lordsburg died Saturday December 10 at his home. Visitation began December 11 at 5 00 p.m. with rosary that evening and Mass of Christian Burial at St Josephs Catholic Church on Monday with interment at Shakespeare Cemetery. Placencia born January 18 1909 in Zacatecas Mexico was a ranch hand and is survived by five sons two daughters 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Baca Heather Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
An emergency Medical Technician course will begin January 3, 1989 in Lordsburg to train new workers for the Hidalgo Volunteer Ambulance Service. Paramedic Bill Thomas transfers from Silver City to Lordsburg Ambulance Station. A native of LaVerne Oklahoma Thomas trained in emergency care and earned a two year paramedic program in Oklahoma City. He has nine years as an EMT and five years as a paramedic. He is married to Arlene Chacon who works as secretary for the Lordsburg Police Department.
The Community Action Agency will distribute commodities in Hidalgo County on Friday December 23 from 10 00 to 2 00 at St Josephs Catholic Church 416 E Second Street and Lordsburg Senior Citizens 317 E Fourth Street. Registration and qualification under 1988 Guide Rates required proof of address and gross income from previous month. Distribution is open without regard to race color religion national origin age sex or handicap.
Two Arizona juveniles were arrested December 1 near Animas by Hidalgo County Deputy Sheriff Michael Schneider. They attempted to move several 70 pound marijuana bales in a 1982 Suburban and a 1985 Blazer. The chase ended with the 1985 Blazer seized in Arizona and both youths placed with their parents in Douglas. The case involved Border Patrol and U S Customs agents, with vehicle forfeiture sought by Hidalgo County.
Hidalgo County Sheriff elect Billy Darnell intends to offer the Chief Deputy post to John McDonald, a current deputy, as part of a 21-person department. He vows an aggressive, fair agency with strict attendance, drug control, youth outreach, and jail improvements. Also notes on David Stone disappearance and Lordsburg charity efforts.
The Lordsburg Food Drive, ongoing for weeks, progresses at a slow pace says organizer John Salazar. Local businesses Sonic Drive-In and KXKK Radio accept non-perishables. Sonic offers half price burgers for canned goods, and KXKK will play a request on Saturday. Sheriff’s deputies can pick up donations, with hours posted for drop offs.
Santa Claus comes to Lordsburg Civic Center on Fourth Street this Thursday December 22 from 7 00 to 9 00 p m. Bring children to tell Santa their wishes and collect candy. Bring cameras for photos.
