Postmaster Montague announces a new combination mail service ahead of the Christmas mailing peak. Patrons can place a first or third class letter inside a fourth class parcel or inside second class periodicals by marking the package and adding an extra stamp. Letters may also be inside third class packages, eliminating the need for separate covers. The service, effective in November, aligns with over seventy postal procedure changes adopted by management.
Robert Noling son of Mr and Mrs J D Noling of Lordsburg was reported killed in an automobile accident in Monroe Louisiana. No further details were available.
Mrs. Helen Parsons of Red Rock suffered severe injuries in a two car crash 28.3 miles north of Lordsburg on Monday morning. Her 18 month old granddaughter Phyllis Parsons received cuts and bruises. Lacy Crabtree, also near Red Rock, had cuts and bruises. Parsons was transported to Hidalgo County Hospital then El Paso Hospital with multiple fractures and a skull injury. Crabtree and the granddaughter were treated. Crabtree was not hospitalized. The wreck occurred on a narrow dirt side road off the Red Rock road on a hillcrest.

Local businessman Tom Shoon details a long journey to Hong Kong visiting his 98 year old mother. He recalls Honolulu Wake Island and the Philippines en route arriving back in Lordsburg December 4 after 20 years running the Greyhound Cafe.
The Mavericks defeated the Western Colts 42-34 then lost to the Cliff Cowboys 67-54 over the weekend. Pace Gutierrez and Diaz led rebounding while the 6'11" Maverick tower helped control the Colts. The B team also dropped 42-34 as coach Craig praised Stiles and Barnes. Community note urges shopping at Lordsburg merchants for Christmas gifts with local support.
The draft board will be closed from December 23 to January 2. Those who must report during the period are urged to come in early before the closure.
The Lordsburg City Schools plan a December 16 Christmas Concert at the Central School Gym. The program features sixth grade and Junior high glee clubs, the Senior high chorus, and special numbers by Yvonne Martinez, Jackie Galusha, the Choralelets, and the Boys' Quintette. The finale, Christmas Fantasy, combines choruses and band. Directed by Elbert Daniel and Roger Brandt, the concert starts at 8 p.m. with no admission charge and is open to all.
