Playas Road Problems Studied At Hidalgo Meeting

The Hidalgo County Commissioners in special session discussed Playas Road bids. A contractor who bid stated he would start around December 1 if awarded the job. The notice to proceed began November 15 and the contractor sought December 1 as the start date. the change was authorized. Justin Kipp urged ranchers on Playas Road in the matter.

Elks Hoop Shoot Set Saturday at Lordsburg

The 18th annual Elks Hoop Shoot, a national free throw contest for ages 8 through 13, is slated for Saturday December 16 1989 at 9 00 A M in Dugan Tarrango Middle School. Local winners advance to district competition in Las Cruces on January 6 1990 with top boy and girl in each age group moving toward the national finals.

Santa Fe meeting targets landfill crisis with cross party hope

The Santa Fe County Commission Chamber heard a productive session on reducing New Mexico landfill risks. Congressman Bill Richardson and Ohio's Thomas Liken chaired with E I D A witnesses, Maura Rice and Bruce King among attendees. Growth in hearings is planned through the coming year to push safer landfills and stronger recycling.

Lodgers Tax Up 16 Percent in Early 1989

The New Mexico Tourism & Travel Division reports a 16 percent rise in lodgers tax receipts for the first six months of 1989. 35 of 44 communities posted increases, with total receipts nearing a $10 million annual plateau. Deming, Silver City, and Lordsburg each posted gains at their respective rates.

Charles Flaherty Services Held At Ft Bayard

Charles W. Flaherty 68 of Lordsburg died Tuesday December 5 at Memorial General Hospital Las Cruces. Graveside funeral 10 30 Friday at Ft Bayard National Cemetery officiated by Pastor Luis Ruiz. A WWII Army veteran and D A V member he worked as an industrial foreman at Lawn Supplies. Survived by Ola Mae wife a step son two step daughters and many nieces and nephews. Heather Funeral Chapels handled arrangements.

Santa Claus Visits Lordsburg Civic Center Saturday

Santa will stop at the Lordsburg Civic Center on Fourth Street Saturday December 16 from 7 PM to 10 PM to hear wishes and hand out candy. Visitors are asked to bring a can of food or a toy for needy families. donations may be dropped at the Civic Center or EMT Building Sonic Drive In Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Lordsburg Police Station and KXKK Radio. Earnest Richardson Passes Away in Virden at 72

Virden resident Earnest Bernal Richardson died Tuesday December 5 at his home. Visitation Friday 6 to 8 p.m. at Baca's Heather Funeral Chapel. Graveside service Saturday 10 a.m. in Duncan, Arizona. Born February 15, 1917 in Humboldt, Nebraska, he was a security guard and Army veteran. Survived by four brothers Perry Jr. and Lee Richardson and Basil Richardson and two sisters Clia Price and Louise Heston. He had lived in Virden since May 1975, previously in Globe, Arizona.

County Health Office Announces Holiday Closures

The County Health Office will be closed on December 25 and January 1 for holidays. There will be no immunization clinic on December 27. The next immunization clinic will be January 10.

State Traffic Fatalities Up In 1988

New Mexico reports 490 traffic deaths January through November 1989, up from 459 in the same period of 1988 and 528 in 1987. November saw 49 deaths in 1989 vs 34 in 1988 and 43 in 1987, with out-of-state deaths driving the rise and 56 percent of 1989 fatalities linked to drink driving.
