Arizona and New Mexico fight rail line abandonment

The Observation Post reports Arizona and New Mexico commissions oppose the Interstate Commerce Commission decision to abandon the Southern Pacific line. They warn abandonment would strand Animas Rodeo and Hidalgo County towns, threaten tax revenues, and may push the case to federal court if the ICC ruling stands.

Animas defeated Lordsburg 49 to 48 in a Tuesday game as first string Camacho sprained an ankle and will miss action until January. The Wildcats travel to Deming for a Friday game while Mavericks host both Dun and Wildcats in the next home set.

1962 Auto License Validating Stickers Go On Sale Today

The 1962 motor vehicle license validation stickers go on sale December 15 at Fullerney, 308 South Main St. Mrs. Margo Ler, license agent, announces plates issued for cycles, motor scooters and dealers. Most renewals keep existing plates with a validating sticker bearing New Mexico, year 1962, and a serial number. The sticker attaches to the lower right of the license plate. The department has mailed renewal forms to all 1961 registrants.

Local VFW Hosts Quarterly Meeting at Lordsburg Post 3099

Lordsburg Post 3099 and Ladies Auxiliary hosted the Veterans of Foreign Wars quarterly meeting at the club. Delegates from Deming Bayard Santa Rita Silver City and Lordsburg attended. Gene Noce earned commander of the year honors and awards were presented to past commanders. The Voice of Democracy program offers four scholarships with trips to Washington.

First National Bank Sets Holiday Hours

The First National Bank will close at 2 00 p m on Friday December 22 and December 29 The bank will open Saturday 9 00 to 12 00 on December 23 and December 30 It will be closed on Mondays for Christmas and New Year’s Day.

South Line Rail Service Ends December 14

Southern Pacific to terminate service on its 209 mile South Line between Dowaiy Arizona and Anaora New Mexico with the last trains on December 19. Eastbound Sunset and westbound Golden State will reroute over the North Line to Lordsburg. Passengers can use Western Greyhound at no extra cost to Benson for connections. The Interstate Commerce Commission approved the abandonment due to low traffic. A 24 mile segment between Mescal and Benson Junction will also close. Centralized Traffic Control on the North Line enables handling added South Line traffic.

Second Annual Free Christmas Party Set

The City of Lordsburg and Coronado Theatre sponsor a free Christmas party and show on Friday, December 22. Matinee "Chartroose Caboose" and 60 minutes of Walt Disney cartoons run from 1 to 3 for grades 1–5 and 3 to 5 for grades 6 through high school. Dist Atty Norman Hodges files action to oust Albert M Stevens from the Lordsburg Police Judge post alleging arbitrary appointment and usurpation. Judge Garnett Burks to hear show cause for a temporary injunction. Stevens and city officials served papers. bond set at 2400 dollars.

Bids Called For Light Standards

The City Council voted to call for bids on 90 steel lighting standards for mercury vapor fixtures. They will be used mainly along Rail road Ave with some on Main Street. Alderman Manuel TM mire objected to not being consulted. Mayor Alan Koff said contacting all aldermen isn’t always possible. The council approved mayoral interim appointment of J M Smalley of Deming to represent Lordsburg in the Lawrence Gay suit.

Cafeteria School Bus Fund Receives Local Donations

Donations to the Cafeteria School Bus Fund totaled 67 dollars this week. Mothers from Wilson School organized drives with 27 dollars in contributions. Wright's Bakery added 25 dollars, Sage and Land Extension Club 10 dollars, and Veterans of Foreign Wars 5 dollars. Send contributions to acting treasurer Mrs. Charles Williams at 412 E 5th St City.

Mrs Carrie Finley Dies. Funeral Set Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie Finley, who died Thursday December 14, will be held Saturday at 2 p m at Heather Mortuary with Rev W C Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Kansas City Kansas. Obituary to follow in next week's paper.
