Scouts Organize District in Lordsburg Area

A Hidalgo County meeting led by Hugo Olsen established a Boy Scout district in Lordsburg with Lt Col J Cain and Major O B Deming supporting. Rev Joe Emanuel chaired the district, Supt J Mayfield vice chair, Omer P Masters district commissioner, and several men added to district committees.

District Governor of Lions Jack Frost from Farmington visited Lordsburg on Friday morning and met with Lion President Tom Mayfield Lion Secretary Harold Scofield and Lion Holt at noon. They discussed Lions Clubs nationwide efforts and district suggestions aimed at benefiting the local club and foreseeing a highly successful coming year of Lionism.

The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library board held its regular meeting with president Mrs. C C Fuller presiding. Members praised the new Britannica encyclopedia case now in the library and noted the book of the month Embezzled Heaven along with a Readers Digest Reader gift volume. Kerr Suffered Injuries From Accidental Fall on Ranch

Fred Kerr was injured after an accidental fall while repairing a gate on the Kerr ranch. He fractured his left arm near the wrist and sustained head injuries and a bad shake up. He is recovering at DeMoss Hospital and plans to return home in a few days.

Edwin Brown started his active service with the Marines in San Diego Tuesday morning after marrying Miss Sara Gass on December 3. The newlyweds traveled from El Paso to visit relatives before he reported for duty, with Mrs Brown likely to join him if called to foreign service. The San Diego base is a major Marine installation.

Hildahl aged resident on a Lordsburg homestead died Monday at 7 30 PM after months of illness. Services were held Tuesday at Heather Mortuary with Rev. Paul H. Elmore conducting. Major Gould lauds unpaid civilians aiding selective service

Major Daniel B E Gould of National Headquarters Selective Service System paid tribute on radio to about 66 800 civilians serving without pay in support of the induction effort for 800 000 men. Christmas aboard the Navy ships ends in wartime pause

The article recalls a long tradition of Christmas gifts and parties aboard U S Navy ships starting in 1915 with the New York and spreading to others. Sailors and Marines hosted hundreds of local children with a Santa Claus, dinners, toys, and silver shillings, including 126 Scottish war orphans in Edinburgh. The practice is paused as Navy yards close to visitors for security, with hopes it will be revived after the war.

Harpham Dies at Ground How Mine Near Silver City

R H Harpham father of Robert O Harpham Hanover school principal died suddenly at work in the Ground How Mine near Vanadium, Sil ver City area. He suffered a heart attack shortly after lunch and died minutes after reaching the surface. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Community church Santa Rita.
