Hidalgo County commissioners weigh closing the 25 bed facility after a bleak financial report. Hospital administrator Porter cites funds shortage and low patient load, with only nine patients per day versus a break-even 15. The nearest hospital would be 55 miles away in Silver City, or 80 miles for Animas Verden and Rodeo residents. Dr. James Baxter is the sole current physician. Dr. Lalitha Fernicola’s arrival next week may bolster care.
