Voters may request absentee ballots at the City Clerk’s office to decide if the city gas utility reverts to city control or stays under the State Corporation Commission in the upcoming election.
The City Council held a special session led by Sherri Arredondo to educate residents on PSC regulation of gas rates in Lordsburg. A December 21 special election asks voters whether Lordsburg should remain under PSC control, with council members urging removal to protect residents from rising rates and to fund city services.
Stephen D Hill urges Lordsburg voters to oppose continued Public Service Commission regulation of city gas costs. He cites rising gas prices since 1955 and 1977, questions PSC accountability, and argues local officials can better manage expenses and keep residents informed.
Lou Franceschini a 31 year old Memphis theater professor began a cross country Trek of Hope to raise pledges for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He walks from Sacramento to Los Angeles with road managers ahead and seeks local sponsors while leaving pledge cards for mail in giving cities.
Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education met in regular session on December 7. Reports covered American Education Week with strong turnout of parents and patrons. Charles Hayes outlined vocational and honors class plans at Western New Mexico University starting January 4, 1983, with a daily bus from high school to the university. A school board election was adopted for February 1, 1983, to fill two six year terms.
The Lordsburg-Hidalgo County Chamber reports a successful 1982 Merchants' Holiday Gift Show and plans bigger events. New directors David Brazier Gary Corbell and Rita Lindsay replace term expirations of Russell Atkinson Ann Marie Moore and Linda Schulz. Upcoming events include Humane Society bake sale December 11 at the Civic Center Little Miss and Mr Christmas December 18 at LHS Cafetorium Santa Claus Comes to Town December 19 and a Christmas House Decoration Contest December 23 sponsored by local clubs.
