Pioneer Attorney Of This Area Dies At 73
Joseph W. Hodges, 73, veteran attorney and former district attorney and state senator, died of an apparent heart attack at Hillcrest Hospital Silver City. A Tennessee native who moved to New Mexico in 1907, he practiced law in Silver City since 1915 after graduating from Washington and Lee. He is survived by his widow Eva, daughter Eva Hodges Watt of Denver, sons Joseph Hodges Jr of Oxnard and Norman Hodges of Silver City, and five grandchildren. Burial followed at Memory Lane Cemetery after services at Curtis Mortuary.

Gila National Forest offers personal cutting permits at the Lordsburg Chamber office Friday December 10 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Each Pinon tree costs $1. Cutting areas include Snow Creek and Signal Peak roads near Silver City and Burro Mountains near Lordsburg. Trees must be cut at least 300 feet from Highway 60 to protect scenic views.
