A Modesto program shows how business leaders advise youths at risk of dropping out. A student was counseled on education value and future pay, choosing to remain in school as counselors plan more meetings. Chamber of Commerce backs the effort with broad support.
The First National Bank of Lordsburg will close at 2 p.m. on Friday December 24 instead of its usual 4 p.m. closing time.
Police Chief C L Rogers urges home car and business security as Christmas approaches noting crime is up 13 percent from last year. He recommends locking doors and windows shutting garages notifying mail and milk deliveries and sharing where you can be reached. He advises checking car conditions and avoiding fatigue and alcohol while driving to protect children and pedestrians.
The Church of Christ at 5th and Pyramid Streets announces a Christmas program on Sunday December 19. A 16 mm sound film of the Vernon Brothers Homestead U.S.A. is shown at 9:45 a.m. Communion and preaching follow at 10:45 with R E Bream from Galatians. A 7:30 p.m. concert features the Lordsburg High School Varsity Choir and post service fellowship with Mr and Mrs Gene Bream hosting refreshments.
Jurors for the fall term of the Sixth Judicial District Court in Hidalgo County were drawn and placed on call. A well attended Christmas supper gathering in Hidalgo County City Hall brought together representatives from all law enforcement branches. Sheriff Forrest Wilkerson of Greenlee County Arizona spoke on public relations and court procedures while Lordsburg First National Bank President Ralph Burton urged loyalty and standards in work.
The Lordsburg High School Varsity Choir will present a Christmas concert at the Church of Christ on Fifth and Pyramid streets at 7 30 p m Sunday December 19. The public is invited to attend.
Hidalgo General Hospital thanks local groups and individuals for Christmas decorations and patient favors. The First Baptist Women's Missionary Society, Desert Sun Garden Club, Pearl's Jewelry, Phillips and Son, Charles L. McGhee, and the Future Nurses of America provided decor, turkey candle favors, daily newspapers, and napkins.
The New Mexico State Tax Commission issues a general order designating county treasurers as ex officio agents to collect delinquent property taxes. They may issue distraint warrants and sue delinquents, with authority to take necessary actions to obtain payment. The order reiterates February 1958 resolution under the statutes to cover treasurers unaware of the action.
Bill Darnell of Rodeo won the national team roping finals at the Cowboy World Series in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in a showcase event.
U F Miller spent a week in Silver City hospital with a serious illness and is expected home this weekend.
Lordsburg Mavericks suffered a 43 to 46 loss to Hatch despite strong defense and foul trouble for key players. Ernie Renteria led L. S. with 16 points while Ruben Bassa added 14 as Deming showcased a later rally.
