Hidalgo Child Advisory Committee Meeting Recap

The Hidalgo Child Advisory Committee met on Monday December 6 to review fundraising funded by civic contributions matched by the department. Dr J C Mitchell presented requirements for funds aimed at public health projects rather than relief, with Vivian Graham noting examinations at Carrie Tingley for several children. Shotgun Cannon Held on Forgery Suspicions in Stockton

Cannon, alias Shotgun, held by Hidalgo county authorities in California for forging Dave Capps’s name to checks. He previously served a 1935 Lordsburg petty offense sentence and was found using the same fingerprints here since 1935. He allegedly attempted to pass a forged check at the Blue Moon bar and a check at St. Elmo.

Christian Endeavor Bible Drill Drives Church Interest

The Christian Endeavor group opened with twenty four attendees and two new members. A Bible drill on What We Expect Of God captivated the audience, followed by a monthly consecration service as many stayed after. C C Board Advances Railroad Avenue Lighting Plan

At the C C chamber of commerce board meeting held Tuesday evening the plan to upgrade Railroad Avenue street lighting was approved. Four new boulevard fixtures will replace goose-neck lamps on principal business blocks to create a White Way atmosphere and boost the city’s commercial districts. Other routine matters were discussed before adjournment.

Lions Club Eyes Eyesight Aid and Tournament Plans

At a Hidalgo Hotel luncheon Lions Club members heard J Cloyd Miller announce a county eye care project for indigent children with state funds. Lion H H Conder offered optometry services and the club voted to seed $50 to match state funds. Miller also said Lordsburg will host the District Basketball Tournament next spring with accommodations arranged. Rules changes were explained. a vote on Lions Chase’s bond status was postponed.

Friends of Rufus Jones notify of his November 27 wedding to Elizabeth Tomme in Galveston Texas. Mrs. Rufus Jones a graduate nurse practiced in Galveston before the ceremony. State Policeman Stationed Here Now

Patrolman John Bradford Jr of the New Mexico State Police has been assigned to service in Lorda burg and Hidalgo county. Mrs Bradford and daughter Betty arrived Thursday to join officer Bradford. Mr Bradford is a native Texan who came to New Mexico nearly six years ago making a home in Portales.

Death of John J. Coughlin Sr pioneer and railway veteran

John J. Coughlin Sr of Lordsburg died Monday December 6. A native of Cork Ireland born 1866 he spent nearly fifty years in Hidalgo and Greenlee counties and worked for several railways including the Frisco and Santa Fe. He and Mildred VanBibber married in 1896 and had son John J. Coughlin Jr born 1900. Funeral was held at Heather Mortuary with burial at Mountainview Cemetery. Survived by widow Mildred two grandchildren and a son in Deming.

Funeral services held for David R Atkinson in Lordsburg

Funeral services for David Rus sell Atkinson were conducted at the Church of Christ in Lordsburg with Rev. J I Brimberry officiating. Atkinson, an early Hidalgo county cattleman, died at his home on December 3 at age 71. Survived by his wife seven children three brothers one sister and several inlaws. Burial followed in Rodeo cemetery after the Lordsburg ceremony.

Willard F Molt Sent Home for Recovery After Illness

After a conference of those most interested Secretary Willard F Molt is to stay a few days at the home of his daughter and her husband Sam P Patton in Paso for permanent recovery. He will receive the same medical treatment used at the Lordsburg hospital. Mr Holt thanks all who showed kindness during his illness.

O G Turner of Pierson Texas has leased a land block near Dwyer above the Caballio oil well where surface water showed oil at twenty feet and a 150 foot well gave a good showing. Turner and associates in Texas and New Mexico plan a test well on the Grove McSherry farm about half a mile from Caballio, pursuing a shallow oil pool in good faith.
