Electric refrigerators and automobiles wrapped in celophane emphasize the season as bright lights and decorations create a townwide Yuletide mood. The Community Public Service Company adds to the charm with statewide, candlelit street charm.
The Hidalgo Child Advisory Committee met on Monday December 6 to review fundraising funded by civic contributions matched by the department. Dr J C Mitchell presented requirements for funds aimed at public health projects rather than relief, with Vivian Graham noting examinations at Carrie Tingley for several children. Attendees included Olive B Cruise Ena Walters Felix Fer Frank Winters Bertha Lee Miss O Hara and Dr J C Mitchell with the next meeting set for January 3.
Mrs John J Coughlin Sr and John J Coughlin Jr thank neighbors and friends for aid and sympathy during the death of our husband and father. Their expression of kindness is deeply appreciated.
Cannon, alias Shotgun, held by Hidalgo county authorities in California for forging Dave Capps’s name to checks. He previously served a 1935 Lordsburg petty offense sentence and was found using the same fingerprints here since 1935. He allegedly attempted to pass a forged check at the Blue Moon bar and a check at St. Elmo.
The Christian Endeavor group opened with twenty four attendees and two new members. A Bible drill on What We Expect Of God captivated the audience, followed by a monthly consecration service as many stayed after. Next Sunday's program will feature What God Expects Of Us with a 6 30 start. Mrs Brimberry sponsor invites all youth not in another society to attend.
The Emma Fuller and Jubilee Circles of Thee Methodist Missionary Society plan a covered dish luncheon at 1 PM Friday December 17 in the church undercraft. A program by Mrs Bryan Hall accompanies the event and the highlight will be the unveiling of the peanut sisters.
Rev Bryan Hall leads services at 9 45 a m 11 a m and 7 30 p m midweek prayer at 7 p m Wednesday service at 7 p m sermon theme The Church Should Business a Sacrament. Wilson parish notices show regular worship times this week.
The Baptist church invites all to attend Sabbath day program with Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. and morning service at 11 a.m. Evening service follows at 7:30 p.m. Pastor M. C. Moore leads with messages on The Faith Of Pathers and Business and Re-.
At the C C chamber of commerce board meeting held Tuesday evening the plan to upgrade Railroad Avenue street lighting was approved. Four new boulevard fixtures will replace goose-neck lamps on principal business blocks to create a White Way atmosphere and boost the city’s commercial districts. Other routine matters were discussed before adjournment.
Monday evening under Mr Smith and Mr White Troop 121 outlined summer camps and year round outdoor programs. Cal Hill demonstrated fire by friction while Charles Walters showed steel and flint methods. A Soul Troop hike is planned for Saturday and neckerchiefs were ordered for the group.
At a Hidalgo Hotel luncheon Lions Club members heard J Cloyd Miller announce a county eye care project for indigent children with state funds. Lion H H Conder offered optometry services and the club voted to seed $50 to match state funds. Miller also said Lordsburg will host the District Basketball Tournament next spring with accommodations arranged. Rules changes were explained. a vote on Lions Chase’s bond status was postponed.
Mrs Bennie Cochran entertained the Thursday Bridge Club on December 2. Chip Pierce and Mrs Cochran top scores for the evening. Guests enjoyed Pumpkin a la mode and the party concluded with a pleasant report of the event.
Sunday services present two challenging sermons in the Uty Campaign series. Minister J. I. Brimberry preaches on A Form Or a Force from Tim 3 5 and The Look That Can from James 1 25. Services start on time and close on time.
Pythian Sisters remind readers they secured the Coronadians to perform a Christmas Eve dance sponsored by the group in the Knights hall.
Teachers from the Bisbee System visited H. L. Scofield on a Sunday after a weekend of shopping in El Paso. The group included Mrs. Mary Monaghan Ruth Stitt Addie Wittig Beverly Ruth Kennaugh and others.
Mr and Mrs R T Bonar entertained Monday evening with a dinner and a prize for Miss Lo Ree Kent who wrote the best paragraph on why a certain cooking ware is preferred. Rev J I Brimberry and Mrs Brimberry, Mr and Mrs W E Oxsheer, Mr and Mrs H E Lyons, Mr and Mrs A V Peterson, Mr and Mrs R B Lundgren, Miss Kathryn Connell, Miss June Connell, Miss Lo Ree Kent, Thomas R Taggart and Dorothy Sundgren attended.
Miss Kathryn Connell reports her brother William C. Connell has successfully completed the New Mexico State Board of Pharmaceutical examination.
Allan Koff, manager of the Motor Sales company, motored to Deming Wednesday on business.
Extensive repairs are being made on the C. and B. camp west of town on highway 80. The camp, formerly managed by Margarite Codding, is now run by Bessie Uhl who personally oversees the work. B. L. Giles of Los Angeles will assist, as Uhl's son.
Friends of Rufus Jones notify of his November 27 wedding to Elizabeth Tomme in Galveston Texas. Mrs. Rufus Jones a graduate nurse practiced in Galveston before the ceremony. The couple then visited Ft Worth at the home of James and Arrabella Ritchie before settling in Galveston where Jones works as a mechanical engineer at the Pan American refinery.
To the many friends who offered aid and sympathy in our recent bereavement the death and burial of our beloved husband and father we extend our sincere thanks. Mrs D R Atkinson and Children Mrs L B Linhorst.
The Copper Inn debuts in Lordsburg with John A. Johnson and Robert M. Wiley hosting. The new bar features walnut and copper fixtures, neon signage, Venetian blinds, marble floors, pastel walls, and a six to seven piece stage. Wiley will personally run the business.
Patrolman John Bradford Jr of the New Mexico State Police has been assigned to service in Lorda burg and Hidalgo county. Mrs Bradford and daughter Betty arrived Thursday to join officer Bradford. Mr Bradford is a native Texan who came to New Mexico nearly six years ago making a home in Portales.
An appreciative audience attended a recital by pianist Miss Ida Bernice McGrath, with soprano Mrs. Dewey McGrath Culberson and accompanist Mrs. E. D. Haven. They performed intricate Beethoven Mendelssohn and Mozart works with finished artistry, a rare treat for attendees.
John J. Coughlin Sr of Lordsburg died Monday December 6. A native of Cork Ireland born 1866 he spent nearly fifty years in Hidalgo and Greenlee counties and worked for several railways including the Frisco and Santa Fe. He and Mildred VanBibber married in 1896 and had son John J. Coughlin Jr born 1900. Funeral was held at Heather Mortuary with burial at Mountainview Cemetery. Survived by widow Mildred two grandchildren and a son in Deming.
On November 30 Judge B D Pennington officiated a marriage in Deming for Mrs Viv al Hardin of Lordsburg and George Wilson of Duncan.
John Hoggett of El Paso traveled to Lordsburg for a business visit the past week, staying for meetings and site inspections.
The Robert Swan unit of the American Legion auxiliary attended the district meet in Las Cruces on December 5 with delegates Miss Alma Perry, Mrs Dorothy Potter, Mrs Moselle Messecar, Mrs Didley Scott and unit president Mrs Grace Wright.
Funeral services for David Rus sell Atkinson were conducted at the Church of Christ in Lordsburg with Rev. J I Brimberry officiating. Atkinson, an early Hidalgo county cattleman, died at his home on December 3 at age 71. Survived by his wife seven children three brothers one sister and several inlaws. Burial followed in Rodeo cemetery after the Lordsburg ceremony.
The N. and T. Club met with Mrs. P. M. McInns on Tuesday. They mourn the loss of member Mrs. J. E. Allen who moved to El Paso. Refreshments were served and next week’s meeting will be with Mrs. H. L. Scofield.
Mrs Nat Gammon entertained a group Friday December 3 at one o clock with a bridge luncheon in the Hidalgo Coffee Shop. Honor guests included Mrs Josie Franklin and Mrs Rosalie Barrie, with several club members attending.
Announcement public for the marriage of Miss Helen Martin of Duncan to Elmer Hole of Deming. Mrs Hole daughter of rancher C C Martin, former Hidalgo deputy clerk and current Greenlee county teacher in Arizona. Mr Hole formerly stationed at Lordsburg as inspector in the Labor Department immigration division, now in charge of the Deming station after Mrs Hole finishes teaching in Arizona.
District officials announce the Poor Basketball Tournament will be held in Lordsburg on March 4 and 6 with about fourteen teams expected. Teams likely include Deming, Las Cruces, Lordsburg, Hurley, Hot Springs, Silver City, Virden, Tularosa, Cliff, Hachita, and Hillsboro.
After a conference of those most interested Secretary Willard F Molt is to stay a few days at the home of his daughter and her husband Sam P Patton in Paso for permanent recovery. He will receive the same medical treatment used at the Lordsburg hospital. Mr Holt thanks all who showed kindness during his illness.
The W M U of the lat church met at the home of re Cas Pence this week with members Meadames Bam Claas Frank Corbell Pelix Jones Louie Capps M Moore Marvin Pierce Tiaac Van Meter Aubrey Daugh erty Willis Lacy W W Shime and the hostess. Following Foreign Missions, refreshments of ice cream Angie food cake and coffee were served.
Local 4-H and Home Demonstration clubs met across Hidalgo and Lordsburg areas. Members discussed plant care, home management, and 4-H leadership while planning future projects and a potential Hidalgo County two-orchestra program led by Mrs. Mae Lunt and Miss Helen Cox.
Mrs Dora Kerr and her grade six class toured the Wilson school library reading rooms delivering a Christmas Seal box. Mrs Mathilde Johnson received 149 dollars in pennies dimes and nickels from the children. The drive aims to match state funds to support tuberculosis prevention and early treatment.
Rumor notes a December 29 ceremony for Lieutenant John Augustine Jr. and Miss Elite Savrot of Las Cruces. Friends extend best wishes and hearty congratulations for the couple.
A group of friends visited the ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Clayton on Sunday December 5 and enjoyed a day of varied activities followed by a sumptuous dinner for Dr. and Mrs. C B Austin Mr and Mrs Nat Gammon Mrs Josie Franklin Mr and Mrs Sherwood Culberson and Mr and Mrs Buster Clayton.
O G Turner of Pierson Texas has leased a land block near Dwyer above the Caballio oil well where surface water showed oil at twenty feet and a 150 foot well gave a good showing. Turner and associates in Texas and New Mexico plan a test well on the Grove McSherry farm about half a mile from Caballio, pursuing a shallow oil pool in good faith.
Harold Scofield local manager of Equitable Life Insurance was in Duncan on business Tuesday as part of regional duties in the agency.
State Registrar Miss Billie Paber from Santa Fe aids the Lordsburg birth register survey helping compile vital records in the region.
