A $500000 lawsuit against Lordsburg sought in District Court will be heard January 26 and 27 before Judge Robert M Doughty. Former police coordinator Sherry Bales alleges wrongful termination after testifying in a bribery case involving two officers.
Reservations are being taken for craft booths at the Hidalgo County Homemakers Council sponsored Arts and Crafts Show and Sale in Lordsburg Civic Center December 12 and 13 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event features needlework, flower arranging, leather tooling, paintings, jewelry, quilting, baking and candy making with a snack bar. The United States Postal Service seeks bids for a post office contract near Road Forks for an indefinite term. Bids at an annual rate payable monthly. bonds of at least 3000 dollars required. The Senate approved a bill designating 610000 acres in New Mexico as wilderness and sent it to President Carter. It adds land to the National Wilderness Preservation System and directs a study of 117000 additional acres. Named areas include Aldo Leopold and White Mountain additions, among others across Gila, Lincoln, Carson, and Santa Fe National Forests.
A sentencing memorandum filed in Sixth District Court links the January armed robbery of Earl Anderson in Lordsburg to the murder of Cheryl Hill in Grant County. Albert W Matthews, 33, formerly of Farmington, was sentenced to 27½ years for aggravated burglary larceny aggravated battery and false imprisonment. The memo notes Hill knew of Andersons valuables and that $77,000 in loot was taken with fewer than half recovered after Matthews was arrested in February in Tucson. A second suspect, Larry Miller, remains sought. Hill was found shot in a shallow grave April 29 near Gold Gulch on State Road 90. The state seeks maximum penalty and asks the court retain jurisdiction for defendant cooperation.
New Mexico will receive more than 2.4 million dollars from the U S Forest Service in fiscal 1980 as the state share of national forest system revenues. About 9.1 million acres across 21 counties generate the payment of 2 428 874 99 dollars to fund schools and roads. Hidalgo County is set to receive about 10 138 85 dollars. Nationally over 234 million will be paid to 40 states and Puerto Rico.
The National Retired Teachers Association will meet December 10 1980 at the Civic Center at 6 00 p m for a business meeting and Pot Luck Dinner. The refreshments committee will contact members to advise what to bring.
