Morris Will Seek District Judge Seat in 1984 Primary

Silver City attorney C N Morris announced his bid for District Judge Division I in the Sixth Judicial District covering Grant Hidalgo and Luna counties. Morris, a 1951 Washburn Law graduate, began practice in 1952 and has been practicing in Silver City since February 1969 with wife Esther, a Silver City Public Schools teacher. He plans to run in the Democratic primary.

Lordsburg Lions Club Christmas Lighting Contest

The Lordsburg Lions Club invites eligible residents of Lordsburg and Glen Acres to decorate their homes for the annual Christmas Lighting Contest. Three prizes of 25, 15 and 10 dollars will be awarded based on judges’ rounds across the city on Christmas Eve. No entry form is needed. for questions contact club president Jesse Liles.

Advertising Agencies Vying For Local Dollars

A mid morning chamber meeting linked city and county in a united effort to boost publicity and tourism. Sun Country USA proposed a 2000 minimum pledge for regional map mentions in airports and terminals. locals favored highway sign ads within an 80 mile radius. A follow up in Silver City was set for Friday at 9 30 am with Santa Fe representatives to discuss state matched advertising dollars. Lordsburg Hidalgo County may opt out this year but attendance at area meetings remains a priority. The businessmen meeting moved to the first Friday of each month with December 9 noted for the Silver City gathering. Jim's Restaurant will host at noon. The Chamber board will meet December 8 at Jim's American Restaurant.

The Lordsburg community thanks Sheriff Billy Darnell and Hidalgo County Deputies for child fingerprinting services. Environmental scientist Marvin Peters reviews the sewage plant reporting high quality effluent and strong O M by Superintendent Alex DeLaGarza and staff Joe DelaGarza and Richard Rentiera. Lordsburg also learns of a $1283 grant for Fire Rescue from the Emergency Medical Services Bureau.

Councilmen Study Group Insurance Proposal Agreement Reached

City Council met in special session to review an insurance proposal from the New Mexico Municipal Group Insurance Company as a replacement for rising Blue Cross Blue Shield rates. The Blue Cross policy lapsed November 30, forcing a December 1 renewal or replacement, and the council favored the NM Municipal Group option with a lower premium after a unanimous vote. A bid for a lease with option to buy a small pickup was opened.

Program Funds Available for Job Training Partnership

The Employment Security Department will visit Lordsburg on Friday December 2 to contact employers about the Job Training Partnership Act Program. It funds on-the-job training for unemployed, economically disadvantaged workers with New Mexico reimbursing 50 percent of wages during training. For details, contact ESD Silver City at 538-3737 or meet on December 2 at the CETA Office in Hidalgo County Courthouse basement from 10 to 12 and 1:30 to 4:30.

Chamber Session Thursday Addresses Lordsburg Tourism Needs

The Chamber of Commerce will hold its December 8 noon meeting at Jim's American Restaurant. New board members Heidi Anderson Ronnie DeFoor and Richard Chaires will attend their first regular meeting. The agenda focuses on tourism data and ideas for Lordsburg Hidalgo County and surrounding counties as a single entity. The Lordsburg depot long served Hidalgo Grant and southeastern Arizona, but service has shifted west to Mollies Diner Trailways Depot, with fewer buses daily yet a rising business load per Trailways manager Sandi Hill. Depot hours are 6 am to 10 pm Monday through Saturday. Sunday tickets may be bought the day before for Sunday departures.
