Linda Evans, 22, of California, faces charges after Hidalgo County officers found over an ounce of cocaine valued at 2200 to 2800 per ounce in a West I-10 vehicle crash. A tablet envelope suspected of containing quaaludes and large cash were recovered. A male companion remains unnamed with pending charges. Both were hospitalized at Hillcrest in Silver City.
Grant County grand jury indicts Sixth District Attorney Ralph Ellinwood for felony intimidation of a witness. The Dec 3 indictment accuses him of threatening John Ballinger on Feb 5, 1981 to stop his testimony in a judicial proceeding. The case ties to the Pine Cienega murder probe and Ballinger is father to Gene Ballinger, a 1981 murder defendant. Ellinwood released the indictment in a Silver City press conference and offered a general defense of prosecutions made since 1977. The DA offered no further comment beyond a prepared statement.

Governor Anaya sponsors a Christmas food drive aiming to collect 100000 pounds of nonperishable food for needy New Mexicans. Donations accepted 9 am to 5 pm at Saucedo’s Supermarket Lordsburg 810 Main St. NM National Guard will move food to distribution points.

Jim R. Dugan longtime Lordsburg resident died Tuesday November 29 at his home. Born in Stevensville Texas he worked as custodian at the Greyhound Bus Station and held other custodial jobs. Survived by Mrs. Evelyn Hillman Hurley and Christina Small Twain Harte California. Graveside funeral held Monday December 5 at Mt View Cemetery at 10 a.m. Rev. Jesse Liles First Baptist Church Lordsburg officiated with pallbearers Frank Chaires Richard Chaires Manny Rendon Don Louis John Louie and Ronnie DeFoor.
Hidalgo County couple Randy and Barbara Merrell are honored as New Mexico’s Outstanding Young Farmers by the Farm and Livestock Bureau. The award was given at the annual meeting in Albuquerque on December 12 and includes an expense paid trip to the American Farm Bureau Federation meeting in Orlando January 8 to 10. The Merrells run a hog operation in Cotton City and are active in local and state farm groups, with Randy serving as vice president of Hidalgo County Farm and Livestock Bureau. They have four children and are involved in 4-H, FFA, and Boy Scouts.
Sometime late Sunday November 20 or early Monday November 21 Willie’s Nightmare and Pat’s Mountain in Animas were broken into. Cash registers robbed liquor and cigarettes taken. City officials in Lordsburg push input on an oil pipeline from California to Texas with a pumping station planned near Lordsburg and construction set to begin in early 1985. Mayor Hill promotes tourist projects while the city opens a new tourist center.
