California Woman Charged After I-10 Cocaine Find
Linda Evans, 22, of California, faces charges after Hidalgo County officers found over an ounce of cocaine valued at 2200 to 2800 per ounce in a West I-10 vehicle crash. Grand Jury Indicts DA Over Witness Intimidation Claims
Grant County grand jury indicts Sixth District Attorney Ralph Ellinwood for felony intimidation of a witness. The Dec 3 indictment accuses him of threatening John Ballinger on Feb 5, 1981 to stop his testimony in a judicial proceeding. The case ties to the Pine Cienega murder probe and Ballinger is father to Gene Ballinger, a 1981 murder defendant. Ellinwood released the indictment in a Silver City press conference and offered a general defense of prosecutions made since 1977. The DA offered no further comment beyond a prepared statement.

Merrells Named Outstanding Young Farmers in New Mexico
Hidalgo County couple Randy and Barbara Merrell are honored as New Mexico’s Outstanding Young Farmers by the Farm and Livestock Bureau. The award was given at the annual meeting in Albuquerque on December 12 and includes an expense paid trip to the American Farm Bureau Federation meeting in Orlando January 8 to 10. The Merrells run a hog operation in Cotton City and are active in local and state farm groups, with Randy serving as vice president of Hidalgo County Farm and Livestock Bureau. They have four children and are involved in 4-H, FFA, and Boy Scouts.
