Truck Trailer Crash Injures Couple on I-10 Near Lordsburg
Kings Mountain couple Brenda and Irwin Carpenter were injured when their tractor trailer rig ran off I-10 about 16 miles east of Lordsburg. Brenda suffered two broken legs. Irwin had puncture wounds and lacerations. They were freed after about three hours with help from paramedics, EMTs, and local volunteers and transported to Hillcrest Hospital in Silver City.

Court Rules For Municipal Judge In Salary Dispute
District Judge Paul Snead ruled in favor of Lordsburg Municipal Judge Jesus Estrada in a civil action against the city over a $600 monthly salary increase. The city must pay Estrada $2,291.38 plus six percent interest and $600 monthly from July 1 1980 until a valid ordinance is enacted. The decision formalizes back wages the council had already approved despite mayoral opposition. The case was filed by Estrada with state support and cites actions by Mayor Alan Koff and a council 5-1 vote. A Lordsburg Board of Education meeting is scheduled Sept 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Lifelong Lordsburg resident Damon Walter Dunagan died Friday Aug 22 at Memorial General Hospital Las Cruces after an extended illness. He was 75 and a Navy veteran who served in the Philippines and was a prisoner of war for 46 months. He received the Purple Heart and several campaign and unit awards. A businessman and rancher, he operated Auto Sales TV Sales and Service and the Dunagan Music and Vending Business and co ran the WD Ranch north of Lordsburg with partners.

Rizzo Bound Over For Trial In Murder Case
John Rizzo of Gila was ordered to stand trial in district court for first degree murder in the July death of Warren Uecker, 60, at Pine Cienega Ranch near Mule Creek. The ruling followed a six and a half day preliminary hearing before Bayard Magistrate Y B Morales. A .32 caliber pistol linked to the case and sole witness Al Kemph testified about factions at the ranch and a political group’s involvement.
