The Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce raises prizes for the first bale of cotton delivered outside the district. Virden District adds 30 dollars, Pew Cotton Company adds 25, Walker Cotton 15, raising totals toward 140 dollars. Western Cotton will gin and bale the first bale free. John Ritter Dies in Auto Accident at 43
John Ritter prominent Southwestern businessman and sportsman died in an Alamogordo New Mexico hospital after an automobile crash on State Road 83 ten miles east of Alamogordo. He lived in Lordsburg as a child, later moved to El Paso and was resident of Mesilla Park at his death. Ritter owned J B Ritter Company of Las Cruces and had other Southwest interests including a redecorated Lodge at Cloudcroft.

Armstrong declines plea in Ruby Cardenas murder case
Armstrong told investigators he killed Ruby Cardenas in self defense after a late night quarrel in his Lordsburg area house trailer. He said she attacked him with a butcher knife and he buried her body at Cureton ranch near White Signal before a formal arraignment.

A two car wreck on Highways 70 and 60 near Lordsburg at 5:30 a.m. left three dead and six injured. The Plymouth driven by Willie Busby crossed the center line after hitting a bump, colliding with the Ferguson Chevrolet. Dead is Louis Bishop Boston. others injured include Fay Ferguson with severe leg fractures.

Heavy rains cause extensive damage in Lordsburg New Mexico
Flooding and high winds struck Lordsburg after a week of heavy rains. The Westerner Motel and Ranch House cafe were buried in six inches of mud, Smith Ford’s roof and back portion were demolished, and a power line and pole collapsed. Damage was estimated at 4500 dollars as crews cleared debris and resumed normal operations by midweek.

Local Resident Dies In Auto Wreck West Of Lordsburg
Claudio Mata Bejarano aged 36 of Lordsburg died at Hidalgo County Hospital after noon Sunday from head injuries sustained in an automobile crash eight miles west of Lordsburg on US 70. His 1950 Chevrolet, driven by Bejarano, attempted to pass a 1954 Plymouth driven by Mrs Lulu Henderson of Greenville North Carolina. Bejarano swerved left into mud in a bar pit, the car rolled one and a half times before stopping.
