Star Athletic Event At Local High School Field

An evening program at the high school athletic field features two major events. The first is a football game pitting Miner team led by Bowman against an all star from the local softball league. Golfers Take In Tournament Sunday

A local golf tournament was held last Sunday at the club. Winners included Bear, Dan Dudley Robertson, Lloyd 84, Charlie Williams, Bob Poindexter, Earl Dun, and Arvil Goodman. Driving contest winners were Robertson, Johnny Rob ey, Jones, and Russell ting. Medalist Johnny Lordsburg.

Teacher's Housing Urgently Needed by Local Schools

Superintendent Freeburg reports an urgent need for housing for teachers and asks residents with houses rooms or apartments to contact him at phone 32 or 412. Information should be provided soon so teachers can be located before the new school year opens.

Second Class of Game Patrol School Met Wed

The second meeting of the Game Patrol School at the Lordsburg grade school was held Wednesday evening. Questions discussed included hunting area closures, big game shooting hours, principal hawk predators, when a warden may check a hunter's license, and the permissible fishing hour with live bait.

Local Elks Club Sponsors CAP Cadet for Meeting

The Elks Club No. 1813 funded a CAP Cadet to attend the Cadet convention in May next year. Gary Linn Deaton and Eddie Broun spoke at the Wednesday meeting about their trip to Williams Air Force Base Chandler Arizona as CAP Cadet representatives.

Duncan Man Loses Both Legs In Mine Accident

William Lutz of Duncan sustained the loss of both legs in a mine accident north of town last Saturday afternoon. He was rushed to Hotel Dieu in El Paso by Heather Ambulance in critical condition. Doctors reported rare AB blood and arranged blood transfusions from El Paso General Hospital and William Beaumont Army Hospital. Additional details of the accident were not clear.

Workshop Planned For Local School Faculty

Lordsburg Municipal School faculty will attend a three day workshop starting Tuesday morning August 24 at 9:00. State education officials Mary Watson and Helen Hartnett Dignee from Santa Fe will assist, along with Virginia Stuart from American Book Company. All teachers meet at the high school at 9:90 for a general meeting before sectional sessions.

County Fair Queen to Represent Hidalgo at State Fair

Hidalgo County selects a County Fair Queen to ride in the parade and grand entry, then travel to the State Fair in Albuquerque to represent the county. Sponsorship provides 100 dollars for expenses. entrants must be Hidalgo residents aged 16 to 19, single, and judged 50 percent on personality and horsemanship. Local Post 3099 Veterans of Foreign Wars voted to sponsor a Civil Air Patrol Cadet to the summer encampment next May. Commander A. W. Bolling praised CAP programs for aviation knowledge and safety and urged eligible youths to join CAP classes starting September 13 to serve community state and nation.

Mother's Drive On Polio To Be Held August 3

Emergency Mother's March on Polio is set for August 31 from 7 to 9 PM in Hidalgo County. Residents may donate by placing a shoe or handkerchief on their door knobs. Mrs. Irene Williams, chairwoman, notes local polio cases remain low but funds are strained nationwide.

Valente Verdugo escapes serious injury at Banner Mine

Valente Verdugo escaped with only minor injuries after ore from a vibrating drill fell and nearly buried him at the Banner Mine five miles southwest of Lordsburg. Shifter boss Jack Mortensen found him. three hours were needed to free him from the rock. He suffered a strained knee and an injured finger.

March of Dimes Emergency Drive Aims to Refill Funds

Hidalgo County volunteers join 3,100 chapters nationwide in a coast-to-coast Emergency March of Dimes drive. The goal is to cover a $20 million shortfall and sustain both hospital care for polio patients and the prevention program as polio season peaks. Funds and volunteer efforts are urged to continue despite vacation travel.
