School enrollment underway as municipal offices announce August 30 opening. Students and parents of Matt and Mead prepare for the new term with morning hours posted for all departments and grade enrollment details pending final schedules.
Parents organize a campaign to raise funds for a 40 mile school activity bus. The drive runs later this month with sales events at town locations and band parent volunteers contacting residents. Proceeds support the awaited transportation for students and related project costs.
The death toll from last Wednesday’s car crash east of Lordsburg rose to four with Billy Jean Mathes of Houston dying Monday evening at the local hospital. The other victims are Louis Boston, 19, of Crockett Texas, Mrs Fay Ferguson of Stevensville Texas, and Mrs Eara Busby of Houston. Mrs Mathes was shipped to Houston by Heather Mortuary on Tuesday.
The Lordsburg Band Parents Organization announces its first meeting of the school year on September 16 at 8 00 P M hosted by Mrs Harold Bishop. New officers will be elected and installed, followed by a band concert and social hour.
Battery C of the 716th AAA Battalion Home from summer encampment at Ft Bliss. The unit of 67 personnel completed two weeks of intensive training as a defensive anti aircraft unit with emphasis on communications radio wire radar and firing 50 caliber machine guns and 99 mm anti aircraft guns.
All business firms including drug stores and garages will be closed on Monday September 6 for Labor Day. The notice directs shops in the area to observe a holiday closure.
Bob Clark visited Houston last week to file an application for his son Bobby to enter the Southwestern Polomylets Ren pirwlery Center in Hovw eton. The center treats cases like Bobby's and may permit his return home. Bobby has spent two years at Currie Tingley hospital in Hot Springs. No decision on the application has been received.
Residents face a beard decision as the Chamber of Commerce enacts a Texas style dress and grooming policy. For a buck a card at Hotel Hidalgo men may shave freely or risk fines from a patrol enforcing the order. The August group also urges western attire for the community.
City records show 3000 miles patrolled in August. Police arrested 8 for drunkenness or fighting and 17 for drunk and disorderly conduct. Three drunk juveniles were released to parents for juvenile court. A liquor supplier to the juveniles was fined 25 dollars. A drunk driver was fined 100 dollars and had license revoked for a year. A reckless driver received a fine. Two mental hospital escapees in California were stopped.
A veterinarian will be at the Lodsbury fire house on Saturday September 11 from 7 AM to 4 PM to vaccinate dogs and cats.
Lordsburg announces a three day fair rodeo and Old Timers Parade from September 17 to 19 with a Western dress code enforced and fines for noncompliance. The Emergency March of Dimes drive reports $577.8 in funds with the Mother's March and letter donations continuing. Awards for three parade floats will honor theme Future, urging Hidalgo County groups to enter.
Lordsburg CAP under Commander Jack Spencer is growing toward 50 members. Members fly FA plane, pass exams, pay fuel, and log hours. In emergencies CAP conducts air searches with ground crews ready to provide aid.
Monday CAP meeting is postponed due to holiday. A joint gathering for senior members and all eligible cadets is set for Monday evening September 13 1954 to discuss winter plans and the start of the school term. Commander Spencer urges senior members and all cadets to attend.
Head coach Arvel Goodman reports forty players issued equipment and serious practice for the season opener with Clifton on Friday September 27. Two weeks of drills were hampered by National Guard encampment at Ft Bliss, but all players have returned and the squad is now focused on fundamentals with the enlarged lineup.
