Bills Delayed by City Utility Billing Glitch

City of Lordsburg reports a computer malfunction delaying this month’s utility bills. Officials urge residents not to panic or pay early and to wait for the mailed statements.

City cracked down on junk in Lordsburg streets

Lordsburg Mayor Alan Koff asked the City Council to enforce the abandoned vehicle and junk nuisance ordinance with a five dollar daily fine after conviction. A Liberal survey counted 27 vehicles on city property as nuisances, mostly on private land, with furniture and other debris noted in alleyways.

Up With People to Perform in Lordsburg Aug 26

One hundred young performers ages 17 to 25 from the international Up With People program come to Lordsburg High School Gym for an Aug. 26 show. The event is part of a 10 month tour spanning 107 cities in the Americas and Europe, featuring music, dance and a core educational exchange with host families. The Lordsburg Optimist Club sponsors the event. performances begin at 8 p.m. with a $3 admission. Local families are sought to house two performers for three nights Aug 25–27 through contact with Don Kling.

Animas School Bond Election Sets Tuesday Vote

Voters in the Animas School District head to the polls Tuesday to decide on a 0.8 million bond issue to build a ten room elementary building replace state owned facilities and provide a vocational and industrial arts center. The plan also funds an administrative building two more high school classrooms and a training room to support growing staff and programs.

Lordsburg Old Timers Plan Parade-Banquet

The Hidalgo County Old Timers Association schedules a Sept 7 banquet at Lordsburg High School Cafeteria and a Sept 8 parade starting 10 am. Floats decorate for Songs of the Old West with cash prizes up to 50 dollars, plus bicycle awards. Roy Hatch chairs the program. Tickets cost 2.50.

Tire theft arrest near Steins Pass by Texas man

After a three hour search by New Mexico State Police and Hidalgo Sheriff officers Lindsey Bryant 39 of Fort Worth Texas was arrested for allegedly dismounting and stealing new tires from new pickup trucks on railcars of the Southern Pacific Railroad at Steins Pass this week. Bryant was arrested by State Police officer Robert Nelson near Steins. Nelson had responded along with Hidalgo Sheriff Richard Meja to a call from the Southern Pacific at 3 a.m. Tuesday August 15 that someone was taking tires off of the new trucks. Several new tires were found along and between the tracks and after the train was searched Nelson told the train to go on. A continued search of the area ended at 6 a.m. with the arrest of Bryant.
