The Hidalgo County Sheriff seeks a Rodeo Queen for the County Fair on September 15 and 16. Contestants must be single between 16 and 19, permanent county residents, and able to ride. Registration by September 13 with Damon W. Dunagen at the courthouse.
The Arizona Brewing Company A-1 Queens of Phoenix featuring Dodie Nelson are acclaimed All-Americans for 1947 48 49 and 50. Nelson, four time All American center fielder, praised as the greatest outfielder in women’s softball, played in four world tournaments and earned Miss Softball of 1950 at the world classic.
County Fair rodeos and Old Timers Day seek old relics pictures and clothing. Residents are urged to check trunks attics or storages for items of long ago. Bring or call the committee so treasures can be shown in local store windows.
A cargo crate containing an 18 000 pound conveyor belt for Phelps Dodge Copper Mines Morenci Arizona was unloaded at the S P depot Lordsburg New Mexico The belt built by B F Goodrich Akron Ohio measures 625 feet by 54 inches and was loaded onto a Pacific Motor Trucking Co Tucson truck Supervisor T Edwards oversaw the move with S P employees J P Humphries F H Daniels and W R Simpkins present
The Old Timeree will lead the parade at the county fair rodeo on September 16. Old Timer Day honors members over 80 and the youngest members as well. Membership requires 30 years in New Mexico. Mrs. Claude C. Fuller is general chair with aides listed and window displays coordinated by Mrs. Wayne Mitchell.
Armed Forces through the American Red Cross appeals for blood for wounded men on the Korean front. Hidalgo County Chapter sponsors a Blood Bank at the American Legion hall on Monday August 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. Citizens urged to donate a pint. Clinic directed by the Southern Arizona Regional Blood Center with the same personnel as the May clinic.
County and city officials praise the freshly landscaped courthouse lawns and library grounds. The Pyramid side, once overgrown, has been redesigned and now presents a pleasing scene to passers-by.
The Rice-Warren crew captured the city softball title with a 13 to 4 victory over Banner Mine on Wednesday night after a 9 run second inning. Pitcher Bill Flipper held Banner Mine to seven hits as Rice-Warren swept the series, following an 18 to 7 win Monday to take the first leg.
Two automobile accidents occurred on Highway 70 this week. Tuesday night a 1947 Hudson owned by H. L. Epstein and driven by Gladys Epstein overturned two miles north of town when brakes were applied on a wet road. minor injuries. Wednesday morning W. J. Clayton of Midland, driving a Chevrolet, overturned about 26 miles west of town. minor injuries.
The Girl Scouts sponsor a rummage sale on Friday and Saturday August 31 and September 1. Place to be announced later. Donations of wearable clothing are requested, contact Mrs Wesley Freeburg Mrs J Eldon Taylor or Mrs Peul Malott.
Lordsburg Indians defeated Silver City C Y O 11 to 9 on the home field in a late Sunday matinee. Silver City started strong with two runs in the first inning, while Lordsburg answered with a six run burst in the second. Silver City added runs in the third fourth and fifth, but the Indians held on to seal the win.
A correction notes an error in the Lordsburg Liberal August 17 issue. The ad for Spencer and Son overstated the down payment at five percent and sixteen months on the balance, which should have been fifteen percent down.
