Work at the Hidalgo County Fair Grounds is underway for the event on September 15 and 16. A crew cleans the site and repairs the grandstand roof while Alan Koff of Southwest Co. furnishes leveling work and three prefab buildings for temporary use. Additional funds are needed.
Coach Kenneth Pharr, in Lub bck Texas, plans to return to Lordsburg for the first football practice on Tuesday August 21 at 9 30 a m. He invites all interested boys to report that morning and notes the team’s prospects are good but several players remain green.
The Hidalgo County Red Cross urges every man to donate a pint of blood at the American Legion Hall on Monday August 27 between 3 and 7 PM. Contact Damon Dunagan or Emma Scofield to volunteer. Red Cross workers will assist. The call emphasizes immediate need for whole blood for wounded in Korea.
Softball fans are invited to a Friday night exhibition featuring the Lordsburg Elks sponsored Arizona Brewing Company Queens of Phoenix. The Lordsburg team, assembled from recent tournament entrants in Hurley, includes pitchers Bill Flippen Frank Bowman Bill Martin John Robertson catchers Victor Ritch Henry Camacho infielders Carnera Chavez Elmer Jones Manuel Gond.
Las Vegas educator Mr. Roger Brandt appointed school band instructor and will begin work with the band August 20. Registration starts 10:00 a.m. All interested students should report to the band room. Brandt is Highlands University graduate and has taught at that university and Las Vegas High School. He served as a bandman in the United States Army Air Forces during the war.
An added attraction at Friday night’s softball games is a clash between Banner Mine girls and C P S girls. Fans are urged to attend as both teams are expected to produce spectacular plays.

El Paso officials explain under the Old Age and Survivors Insurance system retirees 65 and over may earn up to 50 dollars monthly while receiving retirement benefits. The previous 14.99 limit was raised last September 1 and does not apply to those aged 75 or over.
The Deming Wildcats defeated the Lordsburg Indians 6 to 5 in a tense Sunday game. After a scoreless first inning, Deming plated two runs in the second inning on two timely hits. The Indians sought a repeat performance but were unable to mount a comeback.
The Southern New Mexico Golf tourney will be held in Truth or Consequences on Sunday August and later. Local golfers and anyone interested in the game are invited to attend.
The Lordsburg Fire Department has held meetings and drills to learn about the new fire truck and improve firefighting. The department now operates two trucks and urges citizens to clean up rubbish to prevent fires. Members listed include Dr. James H. Baxter as chief and captains Harold Bishop and Harry Galusha.
A gala birthday event in the Miller Chevrolet Co show rooms celebrated the company's first anniversary. Attendants, flowers from friends and firms, and a large white tiered cake with a single candle created a festive atmosphere as guests gathered for the milestone.
Rice-Warren defeated Pocos 5 to 3 to secure the second half lead in city softball. The upcoming playoff for the city championship will be a three game series with Banner Mine, starting August 20, and a Friday ladies game added as an attraction.
