The Safety Council warns driving at high speeds is as risky as a gambling game. For a 400 mile trip at 75 mph the fatality chance rises to one in eight in a crash versus one in fifty at 55 mph. Reducing speed adds hours but saves lives. Each 10 mph drop cuts risk and keeps drivers alive.

Legion Post and Auxiliary to Meet in Joint Session
A joint social meeting of Robert Swan Post No. 30 The American Legion and its Auxiliary is set for Monday night August 25 at the Legion Hall. Refreshments will be served. Local Families Escape Serious Injury in Wreck
Last Friday August 15 the Jesse Austin family and the El mer Jeanes left Lordsburg for a weekend in Durango Colorado with the Malott family but near Cuba 13 miles from town the Chevrolet station wagon owned by the Austins had three blowouts and rolled over. Mrs Austin and Mr Jeanes were taken to San Juan hospital Farmington for treatment but after three days observation their injuries were not serious. Mrs Jeanes was treated for shock and praises. The other occupants were uninjured.

Juvenile suspects held after Pipe Line Co substation break in
Three boys, juveniles, were taken into custody by Officer Carl Baker and Sheriff E N Jackson after breaking into the Southern Pacific Pipe Line Co substation east of Lordsburg. A flood light was shot out and several auto accessories were stolen. The youths face Juvenile Court Monday night before District Judge H Vearle Payne. Also a separate break in at Cookie Jar netted about $40 in cash. leads are being pursued with no arrests by Thursday morning.

Fence Post Theft Charges Filed
Ernest Lee Thomas and Charles Henry Thomas, both of Bisbee, were arrested on a charge of stealing 400 fence posts from the Cienega Ranch near Rodeo. The post truck and trailer were tracked from Willcox to Bisbee, with some posts recovered and returned to ranch owner Ted Robb. Sheriff E. N. Jackson led the investigation with help from the Apache County sheriff.

Fire destroys home of former Lordsburg resident in Tucson
The Tucson home of Mr and Mrs James Ewing former Lordsburg residents burned last Friday. The fire started in a storage shed and spread to the kitchen and house. Tucson Fire could not respond as the area lay outside city limits and private fire department declined response. Davis Monthan AFB Fire Department arrived and contained the blaze with neighbors deputies and off duty police aiding. Ewing treated for shock and minor burns at the hospital.
